Default Stuck in 4th please help

Okay on my way home tonight I did a wide open run getting on the highway I started in third shifted to fourth and then I let off and went to shift into fifth but it would not come out of fourth i got it home and parked it no matter what I do the damn thing will not come out of 4th gear Im not gonna try to force it obviously, but what the hell is wrong? I just rebuilt the tranny and I replaced all of the 1-2 3-4 crap and a lot of the reverse stuff. It also has a brand new ls7 clutch in it. any suggestions???

Did you put billet keys in 3/4 when it was rebuilt? Did it test shift into all 7 gears on the bench after the rebuild? I assume it won't come out of 4th with the motor off either?

No it wont come out with the motor off either. I did not do the billet keys with the rebuild, I did all of the usual "upgrades" but not the keys. It already had the steel fork and I put the brass pads on all of the forks. It went through everything fine on the bench and I put about 300 miles on the tranny with no problems before I got on it. And I got on it probably twice earlier in the night before this happened.

Ok.. It really sounds like a key has slipped out or broken, and wedged it into 4th... Pull the trans and just pull the midplate off to check things out first. But it sounds like you're in for another tear down to replace the keys..

shiiiit. lol well thats why you should do everything right the first time. lol thanks again mike Ill post up when I figure it out. Oh one more quick question for you, the grooves around the edges of the synchros, how important is it which way they face in the tranny.

Broken key. Time for another rebuild, unfortunately. Absolutely go with the billet ones this time. I had the same thing happen to me the first time I had to rebuild my transmission (stocker).

I guess I should ask this too. With a broken key what else could be fucked up? I just replaced the 1/2 3/4 syncro when I rebuilt it, 350 miles ago.

It's hard to guess, you really need to open it up to tell for sure.. It may have damaged the synchro slider, the hub, the key springs, and/or the blocker ring. But it may not have damaged anything else at all... The stock stamped keys are the weak link, so at least when they break, they usually don't/can't hurt the stronger parts....

Not really important after replacing parts.. If you want to keep the parts in the same direction, you can use them as markings, but there's nothing to distinguish using them one way or the other..

This was the first tranny I ever rebuilt and with the manual (can be downloaded from d&ds site) and the proper tools, it is suprisingly very easy, just make sure you get all of the parts at once and it shouldnt take too long
