Odd Question: Anyone Know Anything About the 302 Project Camaro Cam?
I know this a weird question, but does anyone happen to know the specs of the cam in the 302 LS1 Project Camaro?
Perhaps the reason I want to know is even weirder: I've heard a few cammed cars, but none have come close to the sound of the 302. Perhaps the fact that the displacement was changed has more to do with it than I'm aware of, but I would imagine a cammed 302 LS1 would sound pretty similar to a cammed 346 LS1. The 302 was WHOLE lot louder and choppier than any cammed LS1 I've heard. Could it be the idle speed? Is it simply that the cam's LSA is tighter than 112?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
(And yes, I know cams are for performance but the sound is a nice added bonus )
EDIT: I found some info scouring Westech Automotive's Website. Here are a few quotes...
"As for the camshaft, I like a high lift, short duration cam with lots of ramp speed to open the valves quickly. You also have to pick the right lobe centers and separation to get food low-end performance and emissions. Advancing the lobe centers helps low rpm torque on the street."
"The finished 302 met all of our performance goals, including being OBD II compliant. The motor put out over 400 horsepower and could wind safely to 7,500 rpm."
"Yet, it could idle at 850 rpm with plenty of intake vacuum and pull away from a stoplight without hesitating or having to feather the throttle."
Thanks,
Josh

I read it was a solid roller. Could that be it?

Well, yeah.
Actually now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever heard a solid roller through a streetable exhaust.
A few old skool solid cams though. They sound wicked. I'd imagine a high reving solid roller would sound pretty unique.
Where did you hear it?

More cam on smaller cubes idles real rough, just like the 5.0 mustangs.
eg. if run 242 cam on 422 not bad, but what if you run that same cam on 346, would be real rough. more cubes suck up that cam noise.

BradWS6 might have a set of 1.9's for sale, he used to have a Westech 382ci motor in a car he used to have.
I'd guess that the 302ci car had a SR 23_/23_//112 cam I don't think that Norm was playing with SR's bigger than that, but you can call him and ask.
