Default DISC FMIC / 408ci Iron Block - Running Hot

408 ci Iron Block
D1SC
FMIC (EPP)

Car is running hot. 230 or so driving around.

Big single fan, not the procharger version. The car will not cool down and does not have air in the system. The radiator was flushed yesterday so I know thats not the problem unless it is simply inadequite.

Any ideas?

You can always add a smaller fan over the blower on the driver side. It didn't resolve the problem for me, but it did help some. Also, I found a fairly noticable difference in running straight water with some water wetter. No need for antifreeze in the summer, and the tracks will love you for it if you ever blow a radiator hose loose.

None of this resolved the problem for me, though. I think I'm going to have to go with the Griffin radiator stood up and a different fan configuration. Even with the A/C off and only 90* outside, it still gets too hot when sitting still.

Do you have the plastic deflector on the bottom? Your car runs 230 while you are driving? If that is the case there is a problem with the cooling system like water pump, thermostat, or radiator. If it is just at idle or in stop and go, you need better fans.

Sitting still, 200 degrees. No problem.

The second it starts moving, the temps start climbing to 230.

This is teh suck/

Well install your deflectors that go between the radiator/condencer the the front bumer cover (Normally) and if you have just a fan and no shroud you are not using the fan to its full capabilities and I run a second small 8" fan also built into the shroud I am using the SDCE fans and shroud. I run around all summer with A/C on and it doesn't get over *210 at anytime as long as I drive nice if I go to get on it I have to shut the A/C off for the run etc... I am runnning the LT1 radiator comparable to the SLP etc... It is slightly larger, but doesn't take up any extra room like a Be Cool or Ron Davis radiator. GL.

Not enough airflow across the core. Period. Change the thermostat to be sure as well. Regardless, you need more airflow across the rad, or even the biggest bad *** radiator wont cool it.

Do you guys actually see an improvement with the 160* t-stat? I've always read it can actually compound the problem by allowing the coolant to flow through the radiator too quickly and robbing it of the time necessary to exchange heat.

Never run anything else so I don't know if a 180 would be better or not.

Is your fan hooked up correctly? I know its a stupid question, but if your fan is fighting the airflow across the radiator, it would explain why it heats up when moving, and cools down when stopped..

Went from the small single procharger fan to a big 4.6 mod motor fan. Dropped temps 20 degrees. So before the fan it was REALLY hot.

Good point. This actually happened to me. The fan I have has to be wired backwards in order to be a puller. I didn't realize this at first and this exact issue.

I haven't had any problems with the 160 either.

Anyone tried using just a restrictor instead of a thermostat? My dad has one in his Nova so that we can use the electric water pump and fans to cool the engine down entirely between runs. Seems to work okay for him.
