Default Cam swap with 87,000 miles

I have a 2000 camaro ss with almost 87,000 miles its my daily driver. I want to put a cam in it VRX2, VRX3 or G5X2 I cant decide. Do you guys think I would have any problems with a cam swap and the miles on my motor?

do a compression test to ensure your bottom end is in good condition and replace the standard parts and pieces for the cam swap and you should be good

I did heads/cam at 140K. Don't sweat it. Although, I just spun a bearing from my repeated trips to 6600 RPM. I don't think the additional power is a problem, it's the additional RPM potential.

How long did your motor last after you did heads/cam?

How long its going to last is also a question of how you drive it. If you beat on it then you are looking at a shortened life span for your motor obviously. So the question becomes what shape is your motor in right now? And what do you plan to do with it?

What is your goal? Right now I did a Cam only with the bolt ons and put over 400 to the rear. I daily drive it and it gets the occassional run.

I have a Sale on the ISKY cams, feel free to check it out

Well I run the car hard probably more than I should but not everyday. I just want a fast daily driver.

There are a couple of guys asking in another thread about twice as many miles on the OD as yours. The fact is, it is only matter of time until the motor needs a rebuild, you just trade of longevity for power.

Have a friend running an ISKY 224/230 made 420 with full bolt ons. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Don't forget to add the hardended pushrods and better valvesprings, but also a double roller timing chain(stock gets loose). I am still adding those to the site and putting together a cam swap package.

i dont beat the hell out of mine. just a fun weekend/summer toy. iv put maybe 4,000 miles on it since the end of summer. i have a DD i use.

my only concern is i dont wanna spin a bearing with the extra rpms. dont mind getting arp rod bolts, but if i have to change the bearings, might as well get a forged rebuild.

check the shortblock first, you dont need a double roller chain. the LS2 chain set Yank is selling is good. or spend some extra money and get the C5-R (IWIS) chain. as far as cams you chose they go from ok (VRX2 and VRX3) to way to much cam (G5X2). for a DD cam with miles like yours, i would stick with a cam in the 224 and 228 range.

I just slid a TR224 in with 100K on the clock. LS2 chain, oil pump and new gaskets and everything appears to be fine. I DD the car but don't drive it too hard. I figure the engines best years are behind it already and will probably rebuild the motor in the next 40K miles, so the additional stress a small cam provides shouldn't be an issue.

yeah man you dont need to worry about anything, i know a few people with well over 100xxx miles and they are making 400hp or more and have had no problems. the ls1 is a hell of a motor!

yeah i agree, you dont need a double roller. a ls2 timing chain will do you just fine.

What parts did you change when you did the cam swap? Do you race your car?
