gmpp asa cam ? how is this cam on highway driving. im going on vacation but im getting the motor in my z replaced because of a mishap that took out the bottom end. and while the newer motor was out of the car i was thinking of throwing the cam in.
when i say highway driving i mean like 10 hours of straight interstate running. im going from nj to sc.

Funny you asked this question today. As I was on the way to the airport a couple hours ago I was ssshhhhilllin' at 110mph for 10 minutes straight. I was complimented on how it was VERY pleasant. I like the cam just fine on the highway for normal 70-80mph though too. As a matter of fact, anything over 35mph is smooth as ice. 35 and below tends to buck a bit. i have stock gears, full bolt ons and a nice tune.

i have the cam, it does buck under 35, but u can resolve that by raising the rpms in an m6 car, just keep in a lower gear. Highway its nice driving, just tends to buck

My boy just did 370 hp with that same came with a 3500 stall and stock heads. He has driven his car to georgia several times and love it he is also on stock 3.23 wich suck but the bucking at low speed is a matter of tuning becasue his dosnet buck at all.

I am pretty sure you can find a better cam for any
application, than that. Dunno about price or whether
you are willing to change springs, plan to go to better
heads etc. But I recommend you work through these
things in an orderly way, and if you settle on specs
that happen to match the ASA so be it. But I think
odds are against it.

I looked at it like this...I wanted a HEAVY loping cam, like the biggest baddest sounding thing you could find. I wanted excellent drivability and street manners. And I wanted a nice bump in power.
Well here's how it turned out, Got the baddest *** sounding cam I've heard from a 346 to date. Yeah, I've heard MS3s, MS4s, Trex's etc, and they lope... but that 110 LSA with the big exhaust duration lopes HARD.
Driveability-besides the bucking at 35 (which can be tuned out)no real issues. Car starts quick as stock, cold or hot. I get 27 mpg on the highway and pulls real good from a dig, so no loss of power down low. Valve springs have no stress whatsoever with the .525 lift.
Power gains - Others with this cam are making over 400rwhp with bolt-ons. I've yet to dyno this setup but I'm very familiar with these cars, owning one since '99, and the last one I had made over 500 rwhp. With my experiance, it's safe to speculate mine dyno's right around the 400rwhp mark. I've raced a couple mid 11 sec cars in the dark and I'm either winnin' or losin' by a fender every time. SpeedDensityZ can attest to this. I'll be goin' out to the track next month when I get back from my at sea period. There you have it.

Yeah I don't understand why everyone hates on this cam, it sounds great, makes good numbers, has tons of torque down low and is tried and true. I'm about tired of hearing about custom cam this or go bigger, it's a waste of money, etc.. GM Engineers designed the damn thing for the engines they designed and built so it's not that bad at all. I'm thrilled with mine, runs neck to neck with an 02 WS6 with a " custom " cam in the 600" lift range. What more can someone ask for? Plus the look on peoples faces when I pull up to a light is priceless. Wide open SLP LM1 exhaust with Long tubes and this cam, can't beat it at all.

Where can you buy one of these cams besides GMPP direct? Im really diggin the stress free valves and the thing sounds WICKED, anyone have a clue? I want a new one not used please lol

ok im liking what alot of you guys are saying about this cam. i decied im not selling the asa that ive had sitting around the house. what length pushrods are you guys running with the asa. this is what ill have. the motor its going in is a 2002 z28 ls1 motor. 241 heads. stock rockers i have a set of comp cams 7.425 hardened pushrods will they be fine to use on just the stock motor with the asa?

Mine made 360 rwhp on two different dynos. It bucked alot at cruise. This was after my dyno tune.
After 3 months I went to a custom grind. Only changes were cam and springs, now make 390rwhp on the same dyno and have excellent driveabilty.
Do what you want, but I just want to share my experience. I bought the cam because of the mean choppy idle and low cost from SDPC. In the end it cost me more to do the job twice to get it right the second time.
