gears and stall
i need a little help i have a 98 z28 and ive got a lot of bolt ons but now im trying to figure what else to do and ive been thinking of gears and a stall converter and shiftkit so i guess my question is what would be the best range for a stall and would 342 gears run well with them im upgrading from 273 gears and im trying to get it done before tuning

I say 3.73s on the gears (3.42s would be OK...but 3.73s better) and around a 3600 stall.... should be real nice driveability and great rip off the line. If you have plans for a certain type of cam etc you need to take that into consideration as well...
Don't forget an auxiliary trans cooler if you do the stall...

In my opinion 3.73s are worth it over 3.42s... I have ran 2.73s 3.23s 3.42s 3.73s 4.10s and 4.30s.... and honestly... when it comes to gears the prevailing advice will be A4=3.73s and M6 4.10s....I have to agree that its good advice.
If you have a 3.42 rear sitting around you could throw it in and see what you think... but if you are buying the gears.... get the 3.73s...

i've had a 3200 vig in my a4 with 3.73s and loved it just drove really hard and blew it up now got the stocker back in but waiting to send out the converter for a cut and clean. The converter I had was real loose meaning when I flat puched it the rpms shot up to 3800k then away I went. The way I was explained about the converter was to imagine a m6 and then dumping the clutch at 3800k and then away you went kinda like slipping the clutch on the m6. Hope I helped I'm sure the experts will jump in.

The biggest thing to keep in mind with these is that they are LOCK UP converters which means when you get up to speed the converter will lock the clutch and behave as stock.... This means that even a 6000 stall converter at 70mph will feel like the one that is in your car right now....so dont be scared of stall RPM because highway cruise will still be like stock...but as stated above I personally think that anything 3200-3800 would feel nice....I have run 3600s and 4000s and both were great on the street and strip.
Im not a trans pro...but thats the best that I can explain it so that it sinks in...haha.

that gives me a better idea of what it is thanks ,is it very difficult to replace the gears in the rearend or should i just take it in to a shop and on a 3600 stall dose it really matter the brand because im strapped on cash right now

A converter is an important part of the driveline, and i dont think its a good idea to skimp on it. If it fails, it can take the trans with it costing you quite a bit more. JId just save up for a good one, with a good cooler..
I daily drive my 01 with a Performabuilt Level 2 60e, with their billet 4k stall and some 3.73s.

LS! silverado said it well.The stall will let the motor reach its power band before launching the car therefore making it accelerate much faster.

hey thanks would a set of 342 gears work for right now ive got a friend whos going to give me a complete rearend off his 02 ss so 3600 stall with 342 gears still a hefty upgrade from stock stall and 273 gears right

If he is giving it to you, I would definitely try them out. You can always upgrade again if you think you want more. The 3.73's are typically the preferred gear for a NA street/strip car, but the 3.42's are still a nice increase over the 2.73's. For a converter I would suggest our "4C" rated at 3600. It will feel like a totally new car. The stall converter on an LS car will amaze you.
