Broken pinion on stock 10 bolt. Options for repair?
i knew it was going to happen, i just thought it would be a matter of modifications before it did...
sadly, not the case.
pinion gave out. lost an entire tooth. dad told me to take it out, put in new fluid, seal it up, and try to drive it home when college was over.
in the mean time i was driving it about 400 feet back and forth from the auto tech building everyday (doing A/C work on it), and it gave out some more, so my cousin trailerd it home.
what are my options for repair?
we have a wrecked Firebird, not sure the rear end gear ratio, ill have to check that out. my pa was thinking that we could just use the rear end out of that and put it in my car, but i know that would suck because it would be a one wheel wonder.
we have 12 bolts and 9 inch fords laying around the farm but they would have to get narrowed, ect. to fit correct?
i want to spend minimal amount of $$$$$ for repair, but i still want it to be able to go like another 50k miles before breaking again.
any idea? i mean i could drop 2500 on a ford 9" from EPP, but i REALLY dont want to do it.

The simplest and least expensive that I know of is to get a set of AAM 3.42 gears, drop them in, set the backlash and the pinion preload and you're done. They're very forgiving on set up.

hey, thx for the reply guys. i appreciate it.
any ideas on how long that stuff will last after i start modding? after AFRs, a lid cam and tune, id say ill be hitting 400hp pretty quick.
i started thinking about droping $2500 on a rear, considering plans are way later for some 67mm turbo action. what do you guys think? is it worth the swap?

Okay....so we went from spending minimal $$ to dropping $2500 fro a new rear?
If you repair the existing and go easy on it it will last a good while. If you are going to be hard on it, then don't bother fixing it.
