well this is what i got. i am in the beginning stages of my 5.7/ls1 swap. the trans i will be using will be a 4l80e. the car has a built th350 in it now that was bolted to the 350 AFR heads and a b@m blower that i hurt last year at the track the car made two passes one one street tires the car went 12.80 with a 2.90 60ft spinning the tires hard in first and second on 26"/8" slicks the car 1.70 60ft and at the 1000ft the car went poof and smoke and oil every were the car went 12.40 coasting threw the traps and that was the end of the 350 blower motor... the th350 will go for the 4l80e.

i have not decided yet if i am using a single turbo or twin turbo setup. i go back and forth about what is going to happen i guess it depends what i can get my hands on first.

so lets see. the past few weeks i have been working on the motor cleaning it up and taking all the stuff to do some cleaning http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6582/photo2xbe.th.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/photo2xbe.jpg/)

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2617/photo21.th.jpg (http://img142.imageshack.us/i/photo21.jpg/)

tonite i got a few hours to start to rip the car apppart the blower and the heads have been sold so its just bare motor now will make it easy to extract!

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/6316/photo3gpf.th.jpg (http://img198.imageshack.us/i/photo3gpf.jpg/)

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9452/photo4w.th.jpg (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/photo4w.jpg/)

so this is now it begins i dont have alot done yet. and im on a build as i can afford budget so i may move a little slow. this is also my first ever turbo car so that will be a curve.. but i will have lots of pictures and questions for sure!

sorry i just pre viewed the tread and the pictures suck thank apple and the iphone!

Love it! I had a 73 for many years and went thru a few different builds. Ended up selling it to a racer. Been thinking about getting a hatchback next.

I'll be watching this.

Noice. How much did the body bolts fight ya?

Well the the rear two were out once like two years ago for the supframe bars. The from ones were virgans seen wd-40 and the ingersol thunder gun and they were out! It amazing too this is a PA car land of salt! The worst part was getting the subframe to slide out of the tie bars that took me a wile since the car is ladder bared in the back the tie ins are welded in.

Just FYI, those are solid mounts. 73+ Novas used rubber frame mounts and steel shells for the motor side, smiler to the newer trucks.

yup i had to change both sides because the shells were to big to fit the mounts. i plan to use these in my ls setup.

I tested the C6 vette, ls truck, ls car, '10 Camaro, CTS-V, C5 vette, and GTO manifolds on this Turbo 73 Nova Im doing and no luck on any of them facing down. I think only one set even came close to fitting the right direction fitting down and out the back.

love it... it would have been fun to test those drums at the top end doing 11s. man, with all the turbo builds, i'm thinking i should drop the CR on my build to accomodate a couple. and to think, i can get garretts for cost...

well that's nice to know i didn't want to take on a set of custom headers yet but i guess it will be in order. all tho i would like to retain the a/c and putting the manifolds on the right way may be the option to look into then make a sharp turn to get the exhaust forward may be an option

i don't no how to do two quotes in one reply so ill do it this way.

hehe the drums don't scare me i ran close to 11.00's last year with them and it was fine i would think low 10.00's may be a little tricky. they are power drum so that helps a lot. i don't drive the car on the street like an idiot so i don't mind them. 4wheel discs are in the future

I'm using the same frame mounts in my '73 Camaro. It was a former drag race car when I bought it and those were the mounts it came with. On the motor side I'm using Edelbrock adapter plates with Prothane motor mounts. I did have to trim the upper rounded part of the frame mounts off so the prothanes would sit lower and the bolt holes would line up...

well slow going here i was away camping last weekend so i didnt get to touch the car i have also been trying to finish my garage and make improvements to tools so its putting a damper on the budget.

well this weekend i got a few hours to work on the car. this was in between putting a new pool liner in my neighbors pool and working on my moms car.

so here we go Friday i took a trip to the local junk yard and picked up a 4l60e just to get some mock up done i dont no if i will keep the 60 or go to an 80e yet. the 80e's are hard to find here.

so this is what i got a 4l60e
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/photo5-1.jpg

so i bolted it up and stuck the hole thing on the sub frame. then i stopped for a :chug: cold beverage and took some measurements of the stock motor mounts and the carshop mount plates and made my own solid setup
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/P1050051.jpg
this is my second time with a tig welder what do you think?
here is a pic of the truck manifolds and the nova cross member

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/P1050042.jpg
not going to work with the truck manifolds lol.

i also got the firewall stripped down so that i can do some smoothing on it and

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/P1050029.jpg

well that's what i got for the weekend. i will try to get the trans mount in today. then i need to decide what i am going to do with the headers.. don't no if i am going to go all out with a set of stainless turbo headers or cut up a set of sbc headers and make them into turbo jobs or just do a the truck manifolds the right way and do a cross over..

well i have been working on the oil pan for three night's now and the problem i face is that i have no ground clearance. most pans i look at have like 8 1/2 inches of drop for the pan rail. being that my car has air bags when i drop it down at the show the sub frame is about 1/2 inch of the ground witch leaves me with about 4 3/4's. so i am using a stock Vette wing pan and cutting the crapola out of it and building a new sump. i had the motor all mounted in and every thing was good till i put the power steering pump and the alt on and the hit the upper A arm so i had to move the motor forward so i had to start over... with the pan:bang:

so tomorrow i hope to finish the pan then i can start on the headers

i hope to post some new pictures tomorrow..

last night was my first time welding aluminum so i took most of the night welding up some scraps... wow is all i can say

well not much to report over the weekend i took the orginal frame mounts off because they were way to short and the motor was not sitting in the right spot. it was way to low. so i decided to put the sub frame back in the can and then remake the frame mounts. i also want the radiator support in so i can start building the headers. i should have the parts to start that this week some time if the big brown truck shows. here are a few..

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/P1050063-1-1.jpg

the more i put stuff back together the less header room i have hehe. i keep saying oh boy :chug:

its not a bad kit but... the flanges are not the best and there is no collector stars that would be nice. one other thing the one collector was the wrong size one is right for 1 3/4 pipe the other i got is for 1 5/8 pipe and i got the 1 3/4 pipe so the first one i did the collector fits like poopie.

well a little bit of an update..

i got a turbo here its a mp70/.96ar

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/photo23.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/photo5-2.jpg

So i got it mocked in place as you can see i kinda screwed my self with the passenger header but that's what i get for not starting with the turbo in place then building the headers... i don't want to redo the passenger header so ill build around it. i plan to modify the inner fender well to fit around the turbo.

the first thing i did today was mount the intercooler were i wanted it. i had to notch the rad support and the hood pop to get the intercooler to fit. then i built some brackets to hold it in there.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/Nova%20ls1%20conversion/photo4-1.jpg

one other problem i see i am going to have is that the intake to the turbo is pretty close to the rad support. it will be tricky to get the filter to fit. i will have to come up with some custom setup there of course.

73 nova guy
08-02-2009, 07:03 PM
well this is what i got for the cross over. i am not all that happy with it... the passenger header is to close and didn't leave me with much room to build the y for the turbo. i may cut it all apart and start over.. i am going to sleep on it and well see.

i do plan to run fender wells. but they may be custom or heavenly modified like everything else...

the down pipe is not finished yet there will be oval that tucks up to the rocker.. also a cut out by the fender for track days!

you could run sheet metal inner fenders. i think they look pretty sweet, a buddy of mine ran them in his '67 II. just cut them around the exhaust tubing - i'm sure it would turn out great.

not a hole lot i got the heater box patched. today i am going to switch out the ls1 for a lq4. waiting on my hydro boost to get here and then ill build some brackets for that. also waiting for parts to finish the oil pan.

is the lq4 the 5.3 or 6.0? did u just want to be safer with the iron block instead of aluminum? im chancin it on the ls1 with a low amount of boost im sure. im guessing 9 pounds.

73 nova guy
09-05-2009, 11:28 PM
lq4 is a 6.0l with lower compression witch is better for more boost and from what i read it looks like the lq4 is stronger then the ls1.

73 nova guy

i have efi live for tuning. i would like to see 15 at some point once the car has the bugs worked out of it and water meth. the 15 may only be on race fuel. once i get it tog and get the bugs worked out ill prob start 8.. if i could find e85 around here i would definitely go that way!

I would think with an intercooler and meth injection that 15psi would not be out of reach at all.

Im hoping that I can ultimately get mine to 22psi with intercooler and meth

What is the safe boost you can run through a GM composite intake ?

well this is a stock lq4 right now so i would like to prolong the life as much as possible. till i tare it down and do a good rotating assembly. then twin 70's will be in order!

Jim i don't really no the limit of the composite intake. i have seen a few up in the 20psi range. i would ask that question in the forced induction thread

well this is a little new crap.

oil pump pickup done. its kinda nice to leave the side of the pan open to see were the pickup is to the bottom of the pan. made the whole thing really easy. i also modified the second windage tray on in the pan so that it will keep all the oil in the bottom of the pan.. this week i should have the rest of the parts for the pan so i can finish it and call one thing done!

73 nova, thats a fine looking engine. love the headers. I'll be mad at you if you then dont put the coils in the stock location JK. :) look at all the clearance you have. Im using the c6 exhaust manifolds and I really wish I didnt have to relocate the coils.

meanyellowz. where is a good place to relocate the coils to on a nova with no inner fenders. Im using the msd 6010 and I really would like to not have to modify the harness.

btw, where is your waste gate gonna go?

three boards holding the right side up and 2 for the left!

i have not tested the inner fender yet but i am 110% sure the inner fender will not fit on the passenger side! so i will have to take the cut off wheel and the welder to that to!!

little weekend work.. took every thing apart to place the 4l80 in and finalize motor placement. the trans mount need to go back a a lot being that the 80e has a trans mount at the far end of the trans... having the sub frame out makes this task much easier, i didn't want to cut the original trans mount up so i decided to mod the sub frame so that i can put any GM trans in the car. i also not happy with the hot side cross over so i will be cutting that all apart and doing it all over..

well cross over 2.0 is about done.. i am pretty happy with the way it turned out. the only thing is that the tube had to go under the rad support and will be in view under the car, but it was the only way i could go about it. i also got on with mounting the gate, it will exit under the car.

i am sure i will get questions about the radiator hoses i am going to have to angle the lower rad outlet to make it clear but that is not a problem!

i also decided to start build a rig to test this oil pan.. i found this piece of 1/8 Plexiglas and it is just barley the right size! luck be with me.. so i drilled it up bolted it on.. i need to get a bolt on valve stem so i can put air in it.. first ill fill it up with water and put some air in it possibly 10psi and see were the water shoots out!! i have one problem i dont have a legit plug for the -12 oil return line so i may have to come up with some thing for that..

the motor mounts are all custom built both the engine plates and the frame plates..

the 4l80e does fit the trans tunnel without mod but the sub frame had to me moddified to use a stock trans mount. but you can build a different trans mount that would work with out modifying the sub frame

i originally wanted to put the pcm in the car under the drivers seat... but the dang thing doesn't fit under there plus if i ever change the seats it could pose a problem.. so i thought well ill put it in the glove box like everyone else does.. then after some thought and a bunch of wasted time i decided in the cowl would work nicely.. so i wracked a hole in it made this fancy bracket to mount the pcm to and made a bolt in filler piece..

some new...

I got most of the engine harness done. it looks like a mess but it has came out really nice.. there is two main plugs for the engine so that it can be removed with the harness still attached to the engine. when you look at the motor you dont see many wires even with them not loomed. with the throttle body sideways it hides a lot of the plugs.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/P1050869.jpg

also i tore the dash out and took the main harness out and removed the factory fuse box out, i should have the new harness in the next day or two then i can start on that.. what a friggen job this is...

yeah its a problem i need to address i just haven't came up with a simple fix yet.. i want to move the alternator north some and build a heat shield for it but my tig weld broke and is out getting repaired.. once i get it back well see what i can do.. s

i would like to try fbody stuff but i dont want to change all the drive setup.. plus i thing if i do fbody then it will just fry the power steering pump..

When i put the 15x3.5s on it felt like power steering again. Just a thought! I never had to strain to steer it! hell i was 16 driving it with no problems. LOL im 29 now lol

I say take all that PS, alternator crap off and sell it and make ya own mount! It will look so much better and be less weight! It looks like even the low mounts may not work for you! So i would build your own mount on front of the driver side head. It easy to do and you will be happy with it and not fry alternators!

My nova Didnt have power brakes and my manual steering box was great. It felt a lot more under control going down the road. The manual brakes have a stiffer pedal but when ya put you foot down, its locked down! With as fast as your going to go i would loose those drum brakes! at least the front swapped :) take some more weight off and stop safer!

well i am working on many things at once so i jump around.. i have this problem with the alternator being to close to the header.. so a buddy of mine brought me over a s10 alternator to try and it has a little different bolt offset that i can make work and it is also a bit smaller in diameter and now i have much more room.. i think this will work if i wrap the header with wrap and build a nice heat shield around the alternator

i took the night off from the wiring i have been working on for like two weeks!! what a job that is an understatement!

The hydro boost and power steering lines are done!! i know the fittings are not black.. but with the high pressure line they dont make the fittings in black.. so ill have to live with it.

and let me tell ya these fittings do not swivel what a pain in the ass trying to line them up!

also i got into the shift kit for the trans... i have done one or two of these in th350's before so i have a little bit of experience with them.. the 4l80e's are known for high line pressure so you have to drill a hole in the valve body and install this spring thing. and drill another hole in the side witch was fun to drill at an angle!!

here is my home made on of switch setup.. i was going to buy a flaming river setup from summit but it was like 125$ so i bough a 20$ on of switch from summit and made my own.. a piece of stainless rod a friend of mine had at his shop. i put the rod in the lathe and turned both ends down to 1/4 20, i then threaded them. i then ordered a 1 inch aluminum ball from MC Master drilled and tapped it then threaded it on the rod and put the hole setup in the lathe and fined the ball to make it look a little better.. a simple heim joint thing on the other side a grommet that's what ya got..

ah man, the days of putting a shift kit in an '80e... it seems like so long ago. you're doing well w/ the build - that thing's going to scream. i'm in my 500 mile break-in period, still haven't gotten the thing tuned correctly - tuner had a family member die, so it got put on the back burner. but i drove her home w/ no issues, now just tying up some loose ends.

ps - do away with those drums. seriously. you don't need ssbs's or anything, just at least get stock discs.

we fixed the vacuum leak and had the car running for a few minutes. no belt it broke the idler off so we didn't let it run long.

well i drove the car around the block yesterday for the first time. had a few leaks i have to figure out. the trans pan was leaking i just needed to snug the bolts up a bit. the power steering/hydro boost is a piece of shit it pisses fluid and does not work. be sides that i need to adjust the body panels get the hood painted and it looks like its good to go.

i did load the car up for a little compressor surge and it was good!

and update on the car..

I broke a piston in the 6.0l about two months ago. so i picked up a 5.3 and put a cam and springs into it and 317 heads and im in the process of putting it back together.

How much boost were you running? Was it from launching hard or how did it break/what from?

it was on 12 psi 13 degrees of timing. were were making a street pass on the car crack the limiter multiple times because of tire spin and it developed a miss due to a broken plug. we drove it home on 7 cylinders and pulled it apart to discover a broke piston in number 1cyl. the piston was broke in the ring land and down the skirt. i believe it was a fuel cut limiter problem and just beating the snot out of it..

Yeah I had first wanted a 68-72 but I found this cheap and the car has grown on my I don't mind the big bumpers. I do have a fiberglass 70 front bumper here I have had thoughts of doing a conversion but my stuff is in good condition so I can't see changing it.

dude such awesome attention to detail. sorry to hear about the 6.0. hows the 5.3/317s feel in comparison??

also, is there a reason the wastegate is sourced off the passenger header instead of off the post-merged charge pipe?

any more info on the bag setup? separate thread maybe?

Awesome thread the Nova looks flawless. My dad had a 73' and sold it for another basket case, a 69' Camaro. Hope to get another 73' soon love the front end on them it's just different from every other Nova you see at shows.

i really like the 5.3 setup the car has not been back on the dyno yet but i bet it makes more power!

it looks like the gate is sourced off the one header but it is acculy sourced off both sides in the merge pipe.
here is a good pic of the setup: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/rackerman62583/P1050811.jpg

the bag setup is total custom. i do not have a thread up for that. the car was air bagged about 6 years ago it basically is a simple setup with two compressors 6 valves and 1/2 line

Based off of what?

The biggest killer is the 4l80e and not locking the converter on the dyno. Plus the tthe tune is very safe. About 11.00 afr plus we have a problem with not being able to lean the car out top end it goes way rich after 5600 and we take fuel out and it seems not to respond to the change. 5600-6300 is like 9.00afr

Based off of what?

I'm not knocking it, don't think I am a hatter.

I am just reviewing some other builds where the cars are 600+ with the same boost.

But, with a safe tune and an un-locked converter, I can see the loss.

Need to make a HOT dyno run....:D

i would like to make a max power tune but. its more a driver then a racer so well stick the the street tune for now.

Cool car bro. How much do you have in the turbo kit and motor?

BanditDave
05-24-2011, 10:40 PM
Have you had any issues with the mild steel headers yet? I keep hearing it is the wrong way to go because they will crack. It make sense why they would crack but my guess is that yours are still going strong.

Reason I ask is because I just got the same header kit you did from speedway for my turbo build.

Thanks and awesome build man!

knock on wood i have had no problems so far and i do have a support on the turbo system to take the weight off the headers i believe that helps a lot.
