Default 4th gen hardtops

were there any hartop LS1 firebird/TAs produced? im almost positive when i bought my 02 TA new in 01, i asked if a hardtop was made. the salesman said all firebirds were t-top only as of 2000, but an option before that. was it standard in the LS1 years for the TA but an option for formulas/firebird? does anyone have one, or at least the production breakdown of them?

My 99 Formula is a hardtop, they are much tougher to find, but they are out there. As for production numbers and options in the final years of the 4th gen, don't know?

Starting in 1998 All Trans Am's came standard with Leather seats and T-tops (although 2 hard top T/A's were built in `98 as Mule/Magazine Test Cars).
The only way to get an hardtop LS1 Bird was to get a Formula, and that is how I ordered mine.

Also if you're interested in the numbers mine is one of 556 Hard top Formula's built out of a total of 2123 cars for 1998.

IIRC in 2002 T-tops were made Standard on All Firebird Coupes to eliminate the suppliers inventory of parts and probably to cash in on consumers.

So, you are saying for 1998...
2,123 TOTAL Formulas?
556 Hard tops (A4 and M6)?
22 NBM 6 speed H/T Formulas?

Yes the number is an approximation figured off of percentages based from these numbers

Many people get confused from seeing the red LS1 WS6 Trans Am that was used on a lot of marketing & memorabilia pieces (tin signs being one) that has a hard top and 16" chrome ABS wheels.

I have the sign aswell and I remember the Car and Driver issue with the white new for `98 Trans Am in it. It was a Hard Top with cloth interior.

I think people fear leaking t-tops more than they actually do leak. i will admit mine have leaked slightly but only if i am washing the car with a do it yourself pressure washer type hose and use high pressure when i spray the area where the door windows meet the tops. if i let go of the trigger and use the lighter spray they don't leak. that being said i have also seen them leak slightly in a high pressure car wash on the rinse cycle that basically does the same thing. they don't leak in the rain or any other time except for the car wash. and you know what? i knew a guy with a 96 camaro hardtop and his leaked in the car was during the high pressure cycle about the same place mine did. it's more about how the window connects with the car when its closed than the t-tops themselves.

there were fewer made in 99 as well. i have a 99 Black Formula and from the info i've gathered it appears to be 1 of 236 made in 99. dont know how accurate that is though since i could never confirm it.
