Default VERY odd noise coming from Motor

Hey guys,

There is a sound coming from under the hood and ill tell you the exact process when it comes and goes.

Start car(cold or warm) its a 50/50 shot of hearing it or not. It is a very slight howling/whistling sound when its in park just after ignition.

If i put it in the reverse, the rpm's drop a bit and the noise become at least 5 times louder.

The slightest tap of the gas stops the howling/whistling and when i let off it goes right back.

If i drive for a few blocks or maybe 30 seconds, the sound is completely gone EVERY time.

This couldn't be something as simple as a belt could it?!? It has 51k miles and everything is stock. I am changing out my tensioner pulley this week end cuz it squeaks like a **** in humid weather.

Could this noise be from that or another pulley?

I don't know, please help fellas!!

thanks

Kevin

EDIT : IT IS NOT A KNOCK OR SLAP AT ALL!

Sounds like what my WS6 does on occasion. It's related to the AIR on mine. Usually it will happen when the coolant is still warm but the computer sees that it needs to run the AIR system. Once the pump shuts off, the noise is gone. I haven't really looked into to see what is causing it. Doesn't happen very often on mine.

Maybe the AIR or a tiny exhaust leak. . . Or a pulley.

I THINK I may have this similar problem. It's only happened to me maybe 3 times in a year. It's kinda odd, but it happens so few times that I forget about it as soon as it stops.

I would be interested to see what you find out, however.

Keep us posted.

Your description sounds almost exactly like AIR pump operation. They have a rather distinct sound; a constant humming noise, almost like a muffled vacuum cleaner that goes away after a minute or so of run time, and yes, it will shut off if you blip the throttle. This is normal, and should not concern you.

To verify, locate, and pull your AIR pump fuse, and see if the noise is eliminated. Be aware this may set a DTC!

It does sound like something is wrong however... does something go wrong with this pump other than it just needing to be replaced?

I have the same issue with my 00 WS6, it only happens once in a while and if I hit the throttle a little it will go away. If it gets worse I'll remove all of it.

If the has the same noise as I do, It's way louder than the normal AIR pump sound. My AIR almost sounds like a fuel pump running. The other noise almost sounds like the bearing in a water pump went out. Very loud howl and it's louder out of the exhaust. Only out of the passenger side though. Weird. I've got a Borla cat back.

I know it's the AIR system because as I was out trying to figure out what the hell the noise is, I hear the AIR shut off and the noise immediately stopped.
