Default Spun rod without starting engine

I'm looking at a 2000 ss, the motor has already been broken down to the long block by the previous owner and he simply doesnt have the time to finish it. He said it was broken down because it had a lifter tap after 108k. However I think the lifter tap might be a rod bearing starting to let go. If I get the car is there any way to tell if the rod is spun, or if the lifters are just toast? Ill drain the oil and look for shaving etc but if theres nothing is there any other way short of unbolting the rods and checking?
Thanks Dan

You could theoretically do an oil analysis but you'd still be guessing. Only two ways I know of to be sure - pull the rod caps, or look at another car.

The deal is right so I'm not worried worse comes to worse the block would be scrap and I'd scrounge up an lq9 from a yard and drop it in. I havent ever had to do motor mounts on one of these cars can it be done with the engine in or must it come out. Also can the pan be removed to check the rods or is it too much of a PITA.

You have to drop the K memeber to pull the pan. Or if you have a llift you might wanna consider dropping it out the bottom on the K member. Doesn't look too difficult.

Look at this.......https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...-garage-2.html
