Default Oil Pressure Question UPDATE And new question

Alright I finally got my car back together after the h/c swap and the first time I go to crank it up I have no oip pressure. So I tear it back down and discover that I put the spacer in upside down

We get it all back together and crank it up again and after about 5 secs I had pressure of about 40. Well we never got it to idle right so I get in today and when I cranked it up it took about 5 seconds but it still showed I had pressure. I get it to stay on go inside for a about 2 minutes and come back out and I have no pressure

What can be causing this I really hate to tear it back down for the 3rd time I just want to drive the damn thing(but aint till I have pressure of course).

But I'm going to let it sit for about 2 hours then go see what it does.

Maybe a coincidence the sender is on its way out too.....
From what I read they're known to take a dump....including the one thats on the motor I'm rebuilding now never worked....it read like 180psi

Well I let it sit for a few hours. Went and cranked it up and after about 10 seconds and still no pressure

The only thing I can remotely think that could have gone wrong is I put some paper towels in the pan to keep the bolt from fall in the pan but I'm 90-95% I took it out. How can I just drop the pan out to see if thats it. I sure as hell dont want to take the font end back off.

Or is there something else to check

Have you verified that the O-Ring hasnt been pinched or torn? Quite common..

I suppose you could throw a sender at it if you wanted to just in case if you want to avoid teardown....but if it worked before....

Well its got a brand new sender and o ring (not that it couldnt be either).

I thought if the o ring was pinched it would show little or no pressure at all times but when I first cranked it up I had well over 40 then the next minute 0

Thats what making me think I left the damn rag in the pan and it is now clogged the pick up tube which is why I have no pressure

I hooked up a mechanical gauge inside the engine compartment to make sure i have good oil pressure at all times. Hook up a mechanical one and see what it reads.

Well a friend of mine had a pinched o ring and it showed psi but it was weak... I think 20-30 at idle, and came up to 40 or so under light accel... I dont know.. I just know that its a very common problem....

Course a rag in the pan could certainly do it...

Pinched o-ring will do that. A rag in the pan, is just bad. Bad bad. Stop starting the engine! You have verified the engine has little OP. Its time to start dis assembly again. Your going to do damage starting it if its either of the two. Rag or pinched oring.

Okay so I had a few minutes to work on the car before going out and I was in the process of getting all the bolts out of the pan and noticed I never tightend the bolt under the k member. Could this cause the lack of oil pressure? I had the rest down to factory torque and didnt notice any leaking so I dont think thats the cause but wanted to get some more opions on this.

i doubt pan bolts had an effect on your oil pressure.

what kind of heads and cam? Is the oilpump a ls6 or stock ls1? My new ls6 oil pump when at idle is 40psi once it warms up, cold crank its around 70psi.

Alright guys after a long process I finally got the pan out and the pick up tube was blocked off by peices of paper towels

Good news is I got it all back together and she seems to be running fine. Sounds sick

So thanks for all the help guys.

I'll be uploading a video of it running and I'll post a link here.
