Default Nitto Drag Radials or MT Drag Radials?

First of all yes I did read all of the threads that discussed these two tires and wanted a bit more specific info lol. I owned both before, both on a 97 Cobra with a 150 shot, the Nittos never saw the spray at all but I was happy with how they hooked with 305rwhp on the street and the Mickey's held decent on the 432rwhp 488rwtq on spray, I know its a pretty unfair comparison because i know people that swear by both, but I am leaning towards the 275/40 MT's. My car is a 2002 SS that hits the dyno this week it is an all motor car and should put down somewhere b/w 450-470rwhp. My only other consideration is that I will be driving the car about 5 times a year on a 400 mile round trip to see my parents in Iowa, and I know the M/T's generally dont wear well. Anyone out there with my kind of power running either tire that can offer some input?

that road trip will KILL any set of radials... i try to keep my nittos off the highway as much as possible and when im forced to use it i hug the slow lane... i cant even imagine how fast MT radials will die on a long trip

This is just my opinion but the MTs seem to have a little softer compund and sidewall which helps with us m6 guys. I've cut a 1.69 60' with 315/35/17 MTs and that was with barely any heat in the tires and launching a 5000rpms. Another benefit from the softer sidewall is that it's a little easier on drivetrain parts.

what are you running for a rear end ? If you are still on the 10 bolt I'd get the Nitto's. If not go for the MT's.

I put down 333rwhp and my Nitto DR's hook very well.

Going to stick with the 10 bolt for about a month or so and then stepping it up to the 9"

Anymore opinions on this one? I am wanting to order my tires by the end of the day today. The M/T's are about $115 more shipped than the Nittos are, but putting down 450ish-470ish rwhp might be a little much for the Nittos? Just start firing off your recommendations!

Thanks,

jeff

I liked both. Mickey's hooked great at the track and the Nittos hooked great on the street. Never wore out a set to see how long they would last, I change wheels and tires too much.

Look into the Toyo TQ's, they are supposedly as sticky as the MT's but last as long as the Nittos.

MT's are great for the track, Nittos for the street. but theres always something in between. I started using the BFG drag radials and those hook up better than the nittos. MT's wore down a little too quick for me.

best summary

Nitto's better all around on street because they last longer

MT better on track but are softer and get chewed on the street

Too bad we can't have the best of both!

If you get caught in a rainstorm on that trip with the Mickeys, you will wish that you had bought the Nittos. They are trouble-free in rain, even at freeway speeds, as long as they have tread. And I have used them on my daily driver for extended periods (~500 miles/week for several weeks) with hardly any noticable tread wear. But for a stick shift that shocks the tires harder than an auto, the Nittos will probably not hook very well for you.

Ive taken numerous 1200 mile round trips on my old nittos and they lasted a long time and thats with track trips every few weeks.

I've never had MT's in the rain but my friend told me it was as bad if not worse then driving on ice.

I have driven Nitto's a couple times in the rain and they are actually pretty good.... UNTIL you hit any standing water. By standing water I mean if it's raining hard and sheeting off the road it's bad news. There just isn't deep enough tread to move the water out of the way fast enough. If the streets are just wet after a rain they actually work pretty well. my2cents
