Default LQ stroker questions

im starting to look into building an LQ stroker engein and i have a few questions. looking to end up with around a 400 CI engine.

would it be better to start with an LQ4 or and LQ9? i figure the block should be the same so it wouldnt really mater, just wanted to double check.

would it be easier/better/ make more sence to start with just a block or a complete engine?

any suggestions on which stroker kit to go with?

what sort of compression ratio should i be looking for? the car will probably be about a 90% street car 5% drag, 5% autocross so i definatly want to be able to run on pump gas.

with a 402-408 stroker, EFI victor jr. or super victor intake, heads, cam, full exhaust, ect. what kind of hp/tq numbers would i be looking at? i know this one is going to be hard to guess at but im just looking for a rough estimate. i have a rough goal in mind of hitting around the 500 hp and tq mark. if i end up alittle over or under im sure it will still be fun.

thanks in advance.

look for what ever is cheaper. I picked up a lq9 complete for cheap, otherwise I would just get a block, as you will be changing just about everything on it anyhow- no need to buy **** you are going to throw away, or not use.

you can hit 500 but it takes very heads, compression, and a good exhaust/ intake setup as a minimum. I am looking to build my 408 for right around 11.7 compression.

it seems like most of the guys making 500 are 11.5 or above with a few exceptions.

all in all you may be better off to buy a shortblock already done as it is hard to match some of the prices I have seen lately.

thanks for the input.

i had heard something about anything over a 10 or 10.5 compresstion ratio needs a higher higher octain gas then what you can get at the pumps, anyone know anything about this?

and anyone have any other input?

you can run 12-1 on pump gas 93 octane. with the ethanol being put in the gas now I am going with 11.7-1 to be on the safe side.

If you are over 10.5-1 then I would run 93 all the time anyhow.

i picked mine up as a built/assembled short block from SLP a few years back. now they are way less expensive. i run just under 12.1 in mine on pump gas (94) and theres no problems with it.

Where do you guys find pump gas at 93-94 octane? I pay attention to that wherever I go and never see anything over 91 anymore. I do use toluene to get 96 if I feel like spending $12/gallon for it. The price for toluene is a whole issue to rant about.
