Default Aftermarket Headers and Y-Pipe Not Sealing

I've got headers and a y-pipe from LPP. The y-pipe is two piece and it is held together by band clamps. I've got exhaust leaks at all three clamp points. The clamps are as tight as I can get them and the pipes aren't in any sort of bind. What can I do to seal it up? I was thinking about using copper RTV or some other sort of gasket sealer that is used for high temperature points. What are my options?

I think they make some sort of sealant for exhaust work behind band clamps. I'd look into that. How did you know your bandclamps are leaking? I just put on some stainless headers myself and it just seems to sound funny but I'm not sure If I have leaks or not, I dont see black leaking out from behind the clamps or anything.

i put my hand around the clamp area and felt exhaust sneaking out around the clamp. I'm buying new clamps, but I was wondering if there was some sort of exhaust "gasket" maker I could buy

if nothing else, getting it welded would do the job.

yeah that would work, but I'd rather not weld the pipes, especially the Y-pipe to the headers.

any other options?

apply red rtv where the bigger pipe slips over the smaller one. also, when you tightened the band clamps, did you use an impact wrench?

yeah I used an impact. Yeah I was thinking using some high temp gasket maker to help seal it up.

Good post. My LPPs are doing the same thing. I can tell they leak by the water that drips out of the connections when I first start it up, and the water spots on the pipes...

Advance auto sells some "red tape" in the exhaust section that wraps around leaks and seals up with the exhaust heat. I bought some and was going to wrap my joints, then put the band clamp over it, but I havent used it yet cause it works by melting into an epoxy around the leaks from the exhaust heat, then hardens. I just dont know how easy this will be later on when im removing my exhaust for other work. Ive also been toying with the idea of cutting off all the joints and welding in flanges that will seal well and make removal a piece of cake

easy-seal stainless clamps. they wrap around the whole junction and tighten right around it. seal real nice. they use them on truck exhaust alot. They are lower profile and work great on my car. good luck!

Those are basically just band clamps. LPP headers already come with those.
