Question P0480 Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit Malfunction

Brought auto in for emissions/safety inspection and they reported it now throws this code, sure enough hopped in car and now SES is on. which I hadnt experienced to this point but whatever..

What is "Cooling Fan 1"? I take it there is a 2? Has the fan failed, power short to fan, any idea?

Anyway to test, short of riding around till car is hot and see if fan "1" kicks on?

You really need something to enable the fans to diagnose the problem. Look up the code for your year at gearchatter.com, describes their operation and testing. Something you could try is turn the AC on, both fans should come on.

Simlpe test is to take the two relays ,one at the time, which are identical with the starter relay and switch place if the car not crank then you have found your bad relay. Remember to disconnect the battery in between the switches of relays, just to be on the safe side.

The relays very seldom go bad...you have two cooling fans and the way to check to see if the fan is bad is unplug the fan and touch two wires directly from the battery terminals to the fan and see if the fan turns..if it turns your relay is bad if it does not the fan is bad..$45 with lifetime gurantee at autozone is the cure if it is the fan...

underhood fuse box driver side,
relay 1 and 2 are the same,
p0480 refers to relay 1.
