LS1 into an 82 Malibu Wagon
The plan is to put a 5.7 LS1 and 700r4 in. Here are the pics so far.
How it started.
How it ended up.
Day 2
Got the motor and trany out today, and started the cleanup.
2 questions. 1) How can I tell what tranny I have?
2) What accesories are you guys using to run A/C?
Lastnight
It is mocked up. Kinda. 2 Issues.
1) The oil pan hits the K-Member. Solution? I was thinking of putting a 1/4" plate in between the mount and the frame. This would also allow me to move the motor back some, as it seems a little far forward.
2)The compressor does not bolt up. Is there a bracket I am missing, or is there a different style compressor that would work better?
Also, what is everyones opinion on the placement front to back on the motor?

I put one in a malibu wagon a couple years ago. I made my own mounts i used upper and lower moroso solid and a 1/4 plate to the engine, drilled some holes to make it work, put the engine where i wanted it with the headers and drilled new holes in the cross member, didnt run ac or anything,

I've had my ls1/4l60e in my 80 bu for 8 years now. I had John B make the motor mounts and oil pan. That was 8 years ago and I have never looked back. For the time it would have taken to fab the mounts and modify the oil pan it was cheaper to buy them. Quality products from John B.

We seem to be having trouble placing the motor. Does it need to be parallel, or does it need to be center? I can't seem to get both.
edit: I meant level, not parallel.

it needs to be lined up with the rear diff. You can offset the motor in the engine bay and tilt it to your heart's content. But you want your U joint angles to line up.
This is a good write up. They have a link toward the the end for an alignment method that uses cheap laser pointers. Worked well for me.

Thanks for the input guys! Now another question. Will the truck and car balancers bolt up the same? I saw the truck balancer doesn't hug the block so much possibly making room to move the motor back more.

Got the trans bolted in yesterday. Went as smoother than I could have imagined.
When I said center, I meant left to right. But I believe it is more important to have the trans point to the rear-end. Correct? Also, since the last update, I made 3/8" plates to put the motor mounts on. They are rough at the moment, but I cut them too big in purpose in case I found a reason to keep them that large. One thing that I did not snap a photo of though was the driveshaft. I have 2 of them. One from a late model silverado(Giant aluminum) and the stock one. Both are about an inch or so too long, so I gotta cut and weld. Which One should I use?
That is much better.
