Default 3.42's may be killing my setup, help me decide gears + tires.

Here's the basic's, what do you think?

-2000 Trans Am, M6, 3.42 gears, stock trans, grippy clutch, probably on the heavy side, probably will never see more weight reduction than drag wheels and interior mods.

-Current tires, 265/40 18" Mickey Thompson ET street radial II's, 26.5 inches tall I believe

-Engine is roots blown with a mild cam and stock heads, 518 RWHP, 526 lb. feet, peak HP inbetween 5800 and 6200, shifting at around 6000-6100 on a light. Pretty much stock like curves, just higher.

-Best 60' so far in the low 1.8's, could probably widdle it down a bit more to maybe a high 1.7 in good air and decent prep with a bit more seat time in current trim.

-Car is trapping 110-113 with 12.40's best E.T.'s. I race at 1 mile plus DA. I'm probably trapping at around 5000 RPM in 4th.

So what gear and tire size? I would guess 3.73 or 3.90 to take better advantage of my current tire size. Would I run out of gear with 4.10's and my current tire size? I will probably never be able to take advantage of a 28" tall tire revving to where I am at currently would I?

I don't want to kill the car on the street too bad as it is a sweet street setup.

i had 500 rwhp and 4.56's in my 6spd and i loved it !!!! i would go with a 4.30 and a 28in tire ....being a mile up doesn't help your time but there is quite a bit left on the table there....with that power the car should be going low 1.5's 60 ft easily

I had 3.73's and 4.11's in my m6. the 4.11's I like the most due to the better 60's and still at 70mph at 1,800rpm's on stock tires. I run a 26'' M&H Racemaster cheeter slick, cutting 1.42 60's in a 3,700lbs car with me in it. With a rev set at 6,600 you should be able to do 120+mph in 4th gear on a 26'' slick. Also, you will knock off another 2 tenths with the gears.

4.30 huh? I'm not so sure I want to go that tall a gear or tire, I'm really trying to stick with a 26" tire. I'm trying to keep a street car with a big emphasis on drag racing. Would be a badass strip setup I'm sure though.

1.42's I could really deal with I think.

How much power were you putting down with that setup? I pretty sure my TA will rev to 6800, won't really pull that high though.

So 4.11's on a 26" tire huh? What about the 3.90's though?

Does HP have much of an effect on gearing you select or is it more of a guideline on the size tire to select?

I had 463hp 414tq with that 1.42 60foot. I chose the most gear I thought I could and still drive down the highway at a good rpm on a stock tires. The 4.11 will 60 better and you will only be at 1,800rpm's at 70mph on the highway. With a 26'' slick or stock size DR you will be in your power band with 4.11's. With your (SORRY)low trap speed, the 4.11 will be real good. A 3.90 will work, will loose a little 60foot and will be little lower rpm's on the highway. It will also top out a little more in 4th gear. On stock size tires with the 4.11 you will top 122-124 in 4th gear. If you try the 4.11,you will like it. I did.

Great answer to all my questions! I'm ordering some 4.11's tonight! Going in the stock 10 bolt though. I'll try it out, if I like it and I get the gains I'm looking for, I'll get them in an S60 next spring.

Thanks!

Anyone got anything else to add?

Yeah, get ready to get that s60....With you wanting the 1.4? 60' you'll break the 10 bolt with any hard dumps and a good sticky tire....I run a 28'' slick and 4.56's with a 1.4 sixty...
I also run 18's on the street...you want the 28'' IMO for the track.....Just make sure you get a stiff sidewall..

This is a hard one........Im sure you wanna stay in 4th gear and dont want to go into 5th. I would check out the gear and tire calculators and see what combo would keep you in 4th. It will be between the 3.73 and 3.90's. I would maybe step up to a 27 inch tire and a 3.90 if it was me. With the power your making you dont need any bigger of a gear then a 3.90, thats my opinion. Good luck though!

Yeah and I 60 foot 1.42 on a 26'' tire and 4.11's. Hay,kiss the 10bolt bye bye. Dont need a 28'' tire for his traps and he still wants to drive it around and not tach 2,300+ at 70mph. All done here. goodluck to ya bro.

Yeah, after doing some research in the gears section, sounds like everyone breaks the 4.10's in a 10 bolt on the track at least. I got a quote to get 4.10's installed also. With the gears, rebuild kit, and install it costs half as much as an S60 which I can install myself I'm sure. Guess I'm gonna wait until next spring and have it for opening season in 2010.

Not much point in putting that money into something that's going to break just to get maybe a few 11 sec. passes.

Thanks everyone!
