General LSX Automobile Discussion - A few questions that I couldn't find answers for

I've searched around the forums and the net but to not prevail. So here goes...

I've got the Camaro listed in my sig. Its got Kumho Ecsta xs tires. 285/40ZR17 100W fronts and 315/35ZR17 102W rears. Max PSI on these are 51 however, what should I be inflating these to?

Next Q I've got is prolly just a rumor, I think. When decelerating, if you leave the car in gear, it uses no gas and the engine is just turning over due to the wheels spinning. What do you guys think?

Lastly, at what rpm on the highway does a stock Camaro with 3.42 gears get max mpg. I've heard a few different ones like 1800 rpms which gets me to about 85 or so. I figured that 65 (my area highway speed limit) with lowest rpms would be better as its lower engine rotation.

What are good gas saving bolt-ons or mods to do to one's Cammy?

If you didn't notice by now, I'm trying to squeeze out every drop of gas due to summer gas prices. Trying to save a few bucks at the pump to get some more mods in on the car later this year.

I understand wanted to modify the car, but the car is ment to be enjoyed, not. "OMG am I driving slow enough in 6th gear to get 40 MPG in a LS1 v8?" Please, beat that beast and get that 12 miles to the gallon so you KNOW your having fun with a sports car; Not an eco box.

Yes you use gas while deaccelerating, otherwise the engine would shut off.
Yes, the lower the rpms the less gas you use.
And get new tires.. Those are sissy tires.

Haha, thanks mate. That put a smile on my face. While I don't drive like a maniac, I do get on the gas from time to time. Hell, earlier today some bronze buick comes flying up in my rear view prolly doing around 110 and I pulled him hard and shut down around 130. I just want to save some gas in between my WOT moments. I'm aware its not a Toyota Prius but I'd like to keep some sanity to my MPG. Also, its a beautiful car. I could never sell it!

Mechanically, the car is running perfectly on the exception of the A.I.R. system throwing a SES code. Thanks for the idea.

For future reference your recommended tire pressures based on the vehicles weight are on the drivers door frame. The brand does not matter, nor does the tires maximum pressure. As fas as mileage, keeping her under 2k RPM without lugging the engine will do you best, you won't see much difference between 1600 and 1800rpm or whatever.

I can understand if you want to get some mpg out of your car nothing wrong with that. As for tires keep the pressure at what the manufacturer suggests which is on the driverside door jam regardless of tire size, its by weight of the vehicle which determines the psi for the tires.

Ahh, Thank you both very much. I wasn't aware that PSI is determined by weight. That helps a lot!

I tend to keep the engine under 2k cause the exhaust and car styling is enough to make the illusion that I am going fast.

An underdrive pulley & electric water pump will give you slightly better
gas mileage. FTRA advertises a gas mileage increase. I'm not sure if it
actually works though.

Thats complete bullshit. If the wheels are turning and the motor is physically coupled to the wheels via the clutch engaged then it will turn with no fuel, the momentum of the car is what is turning it.

Thats kinda bullshit too bc if the rpms go too low then you will lug the engine and hurt mph, there is a happy medium.

So technically you would use less gas by going down a hill in gear with the throttle closed than by coasting down the hill in neutral at idle.

The coils will still fire and provide spark, but the injectors will shut off.

So theoretically, yes, you could go down a 20 mile grade with it in gear with the throttle closed and you shouldn't use a drop of fuel.

There is still fuel going into the engine when coasting or else you would totally lean out.. If this theory was true then while coasting in an M6 car if you stepped on the clutch the motor would die..

okay, back to this ,if your going downhill for 20 miles without toughing the accelarator, how is fuel getting into the engine cylinders which it would require to keep it running, you know the spray, compress ,bang, push piston sequence,whatcha ma callit thing that they do:huh:

There was a guy I read about that had perfected the gas saving method by driving slower then shit, putting the car in neutral and cruising down hills and not breaking on turns to use centrifugal force to keep moving. So if you want to live your life worrying about gas prices, buy a smart car and join the crowd hippies and socialites who have nothing better to do. I bought my SS to be a loud and obnoxious car that turns heads. I bought a crotch rocket for gas.
