Default 1981 CJ5 Jeep - 5.3 Swap - Power Steering Pulley Issues

Hey everyone,

We are in the process of swappng a 5.3L from an 04' Avalanche (the one that was in my truck previously) into an 1981 CJ5. Well, we have the motor in place with tranny attached and have ran into a snag.

The power steering pulley on the pump hits the steering shaft on the jeep. Granted, its a pump with reservoir attached and not the pump with the remote reservoir, but the pulley should be in the same location....I think.

What has anyone done to either fix the issue with using the stock power steering pump from the 5.3L or used in place of it to fit. We want to try and stay away from getting a new steering shaft and box if all possible, but want to do it right.

Anyways, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Cody B.

Same problem with my FJ40. I had to use a two part shaft to go around the pulley. I believe you can find smaller diameter pulleys (PSC makes one and check the junkyards) and and gain a bit there too.

Best of luck,

Well, with the two part shaft, wouldn't you still end up with the same issue? The steering box isnt moving and it the steering shaft would be at the same angle, just two pieces...maybe I'm wrong there and have to change the angle out of the firewall.

And as for the pulley, I'll check for one. That will fix us up if we can get one, because its close to working now. I just didn't know if there would be problems if I over revved the power steering pump...back to some more research.

THanks for the input and keep it coming if there's anymore guys.

It's actually three piece... you'd think I'd have learned to count by this point in life!!

No the shaft actually has a extra u-joint down near the pulley. It no longer goes in a straight line. Obviously it needs to be supported by an extra bearing just above the middle U-Joint. I'm probably not explaining it well, but I think it's somewhat common in street rod applications.

I have a photo:

Link is only active 8a-11pm PST.

That being said, a smaller pulley would have been *way* easier!

I was looking in the yard the other eay, I think the 3.8 camaro pulley is about an inch smaller, so if you only need a half inch, it might help you out

Thanks for all the input guys. We called that pulley place listed in the 2nd post and they had one that is supposed to give us another inch...so it should be just what we need. They said that if we do a lot of high RPM driving, you'll hear the pump whine a bit, but for a crawler jeep that will do a little towing, it should be great. I'm sure we'll get on it every once in a while...but thats not the purpose of the swap...yet

Thanks again for everything and I'll post some pics when we get the pulley swapped out!

One of the smallest pulleys I have found (about 5.25") can be found at your local parts store under a Dorman part number 300-123.

If that's the 3.1 pulley, don't you have to push that one on, further then normal, since it's a flat pulley, instead of having an offset?
