General LSX Automobile Discussion - How reliable and long lasting are LS1s?

ls1's are just like any other engine. Maintain it and it will last you a long time, treat it like shit and it will return the favor. Nothing special about them really...

How much RWHP does a stock LS1 98 z28 put down? This one has slp y pipe, magnaflow catback, underdrive pulley, aftermarket intake.. Thats about 20 hp on top of it right? im used to push rod engines so i dont know much about these.

with those mods you will see around 300 to the wheels

just a fyi the ls is a pushrod engine.

and ive seen SEVERAL strong ls1's past 130k+ still strong as ever

all lsX type engines are pushrod engines.

What I like about these motors is the simplicity yet great dependability. Sometimes less means more in my opinion. If you have a good, clean base and maintain it right from day one, I cant see it giving you any headaches down the road. Treat it good, and it will treat you the same in return. The only thing mechanicaly *knock on wood* is the piston slap I get upon start up which goes away shortly. Other then that, no complaints.

It really depends on how you treat the motor and maintain the motor. You deside to abuse it and race it everyday, it will return the favor with breaking down all the time, and will inturn a big money pit. If you maintain the car and drive the car like it was a grand ma you will have a long lasting car. It really depends on the force of your right foot.

Change all the fluids, let it warm up a second before you beat on it, keep it cool, keep shit fixed.

163k and going

There are plenty of guys on here with over 200K still running strong. However, a 173K performance car that I didn't know the history of would make me a bit nervous no matter what engine is in it.

Saw a 99 T/A that had 320k all highway on it on autotrader no too long ago. I test drove it and ran like my SS with 64k. Said he did all the regular items to maintain it and never had a problem!!

Wow.. I would rather own that car then some of the low mileage ones i see that people beat the hell out of. lol
