Default Accidently hit reverse when going into 5th

Well i was racing a guy the other night and when i went from 4th to 5th i accidently hit reverse. Now i can hardly get the car to go into reverse at all. It does not grind. It just doesn't like reverse now. Any ideas guys? Carbon Fiber Synchros (Brass Reverse)

did you have the solenoid unhooked on the tranny? the one that locks out reverse? if so, that was dumb.

WOW, you managed to go into reverse while tryin to hit 5th & it didn't gernade the tranny, rear end, clutch & possibly more? If thats right I'd say you got DAMN lucky with it. Althought I dont see how this is possible cause there is a reverse lockout on these T56 tranny's. I dont think in my whole time on here I have ever seen anyone else achieve this.

You can get any parts needed for it from Tick Performance.

LOL, a little excitement is a understatement. I have banged 5th hard on the HWY so many times I cant remember & never achieved goin into reverse. Makes me think his lockout was not working to begin with.

The solenoid is not unhooked on the tranny, and it didn't actually engage into reverse. I dont know how i hit reverse when trying to get 5th, but i did. Just looking for ideas.

still crazy. just be a little more careful next time. Did you completely let the clutch out? If so, how did you not wreck your car? going into 5th, at what 130mph or so, and probably just locking up the rear tires, you my friend are a lucky sumbitch. If I was you I would look into buying a new solenoid

I agree with bigmike, I think it would take some serious excitment to bang it into reverse. I myself have slammed it over there into 5th and never had a worry. Just get rolling about 10mph and try to shove it in reverse, just don't let the clutch out, I have tried and never been sucessful

I saw a yellow C5 corvette at island dragway do that on the 10th, but then he got back in the staging lanes and ended up running in the low 12s. Good luck with yours trans. If you need parts, Tick Performance has stuff for the T56, and they are easy to deal with.

It's not that hard to hit Reverse.. I got it a couple of times aswell at 140+mph trying to grab 5th..that Solenoid is very easy to over-ride with the adrenaline pumpin and a short-shifter.

I wish I had a good pic of the Gear to post up..I just tore mine down to re-build it. Basically the Brass Synchro attempted to catch the Gear as it should, but everything was spinning so fast forward that when it tried to engage that Reverse Gear on the Main Shaft that happened to be spinning in the opposite direction(that's how it works, it has one extra gear between the Mainshaft Gear and the Gear on the Countershaft so it spins opposite) it tore the Reverse Gear Engagement Teeth and the inner Teeth on the Slider to ****.

The Teeth are supposed to be pointed on the Gear and the Slider(look like this ^), but instead they were completely squared off, as in both sets of teeth looked rectangular. That is why for me Reverse was so hard to engage, none of the Teeth would line up unless I held it grinding for a sec then it would slide in, and most of the time pop out.

It is possible to grab Reverse at that speed..you would have to hold it there grinding for a few seconds to allow the Countershaft and Clutch to completely stop moving forward and then it will get into whatever is rest of Reverse.

I don't know what would happen then but I bet it wouldn't be pretty.

Me personally I won't try to speed-shift 5th anymore..just let it slide in.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I appreciate it. Yeah i have a pro 5.0 on the car and the shift **** its self is lose "stripped inside" so it will twist left and right so its not fun grabbing gears. I ordered a new shift **** white hurst shift ball, and come to find out the guy who had the car before me used a short stick for a mustang so the threads are smaller.

No , actually this is a dumb statement. If you unplug the solenoid the inhibitor is always ON.

you didnt hit reverse, well you might have lol, but i highly doubt it...

i was doing a whole shot a couple months back and when into 5th HARD never actually engaged into 5th so i immediately let off and pulled over, went through the gears and all up top gears (1,3,5,R) were hard to go into

i still have trouble going into them from time to time, but nothing major- basically it feels like it clicks into gear when i know i didnt push it far enough, and if i were to let the clutch out (instead of just putting muscle into it and pushing the shifter into gear) the tranny grinds until i push the clutch back in.... this only happens about once every couple of days, but it still happens- maybe i damg the syncros or the shifter?
