Default 17" nittos on M6...help

ok, my mods are in my sig...i just put on some 275/40-17 nitto drag radials...

at the track i couldn't pull less than a 2.00 60 ft...what am i doing wrong? i tried all different kinds of launch techniques...the track is pretty good about prep and always has decent traction.

i had the same tires on my mustang GT and had the same problems...

but i see people pulling 1.7x's and even 1.6x's on nittos...what gives?

i'd be happy with some 1.8's

help

Doing any sort of burnout? How long? How hard are you launching the car? Probably have to play with the launch a bit, ride the clutch out a little bit maybe? Clutch dumps on anything other than a stiff clutch, comparable rear end and nice hot sticky tires is dangerous

Wait, wait... the Nittos are fine.
I used to get 1.9xx without trying.
I modified a bit with some advice the other day and cut 1.8xxs.

1. Good burnout (heel/toeing of course).
2. Pump clutch while approaching beams.
3. Hold revs at 3000.
4. Christmas tree 2nd or 3rd amber... let clutch out (yes dump) but do NOT mash the gas while dumping clutch. HOLD REVS!
5. After car rolls forward a bit... PUNCH it.

I go at 18-19 psi.
Can go down to 16.

Easily said (and done) when your car's sitting on a 12 Bolt or 9".

I did it on the 10 bolt and it lasted about a year. The point is though that Nittos are a great tire when used right.
One thing though is a good burnout, no smoke no stick. Air pressure on 17's seem to like 20 psi on my 315's. The 16's liked 16-18 psi.

The best I pulled on BFGs was 1.91 after a lot of practice using a similar method. I think my clutch had to much slipage for any better times. I wasn't spinning on those launches. Line lock will also help with the burnouts

Agreed , Line lock works great along with a second gear burnout just outside the water box with tires only damp at start of burnout.

well, after the track day...

i started off by pulling a 1.99 with a slight bog

then a lot of 2.1's and finally back into consistant 2.0x's

best pass came on a 3200 launch with a little spin

2.05
8.32 @ 87.1
12.79 @ 110.1

I had the same problem with my 17" nitto's until I got some heat into them. They take a long burnout. I could never master the three foot burnout with my M6, so I put a line lock in. Smoked the stock clutch on my first pass after that.

I helped a guy at the track last nigh that was running strong but could not get out the hole better than a 2.0 but run 12 .1's . I told him to do just what me and south florida has been telling you and he went 11.95 with a 1.86 60 on a not that good of a track(state capital in Baton Rouge) . He still has the front sway bar on and you could see the car squat in the back but the front would not lift to help keep the wait on the back and he would start to spin. He is going to pull it this week and try again next Friday without the sway bar. I look for him to be in the 1.7's next friday night.
