I don't see that car getting better mpg's than a LS1/T56. You can't beat double overdrive...
I have seen several for sale with a blown head gasket, don't know if that is a common problem or not...

Blown headgasket is a common problem (especially on M5 cars) as well as leaking rear main seal. T5 transmissions are also very weak. A Spec stage 3 clutch is a good upgrade. How many miles? 1500 is a great price. I have gotten better MPG than LSx f-body guys on most of the cruises I have been on - and that's with an automatic and running on 87 octane (which is what they are tuned for from the factory). Assuming you granny drive you should be able to get over 28MPG highway on 87 octane. Even if you have an LS1/T56 getting 28MPG it's still 28MPG on 91 octane, not 87.

On stock 16" wheels I was getting around 270 miles (worst... floored from almost every stop up to the speed limit) to 350 miles per tank with city/highway driving, and on road trips I got up to 386 miles before I pansied out and pulled over for some gas (1/8th tank). This with an A4 trans and 3.42s on 87 octane. 1999+ has a larger fuel tank than 1993-1998, though.
