Cold side piping material

Default Cold side piping material

I see that most people with turbo setups are running aluminum piping for their cold side....why? Weight? Thermal properties? Corrosion resistance?

I'm working on a custom setup and it'd be a lot easier for me to run mild or stainless steel so I can cut and weld as needed. Is there any real downfall to using steel instead of aluminum? Search didn't turn up anything useful.

weight is the main thing. 4" mild steel is HEAVY!

So is a Jeep Scrambler on 41" tires

I'll have 3" piping to and from the intercooler and will use as little as possible, so weight won't be a huge concern for me. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't another reason I was missing.

I used some mild steel on mine for same reasons, I had the gear to weld mild myself, but not ali.

I had the pipes done in a thermal coating when done, they came up great and no worries about rust or corrosion.

if weight isnt an issue then go for it. or just set your machine up for aluminum if possible.

aluminum, all around better than mild steel. cools of quicker also
