Default 2nd Gear "dissapeared"

I have a friend that doesn't post on the boards, but has a 1996 Trans-Am, light bolt on car, with 80k miles on it. Bought the car with roughly 55k miles on it. Been to the track once since he got it, there were zero issues with the trans other than the stock clutch slipping a bit at the track. Last week I guess he was out playing a bit and went to grab second pretty much and it was just gone. No grind, no crunch, just zero engagement. I didn't believe him, so I drove it, and its true. It will go where second gear should be, and acts just like neutral. You have to rev match to get it into gear at higher speeds, (like trying to put it in second at 50 where it should be at like 4k), so I don't know what the hell is going on. Little help guys? If I left out any pertinent information let me know, I'm more than happy to answer. Just want to figure out whats wrong!!!

What gears do you have to rev-match it in?

As far as 2nd goes.. probably did what I recently did to mine..ripped all the engagement teeth off of the Gear.
If so, you will be 2nd-less till you re-build it. I had the weaker version of 2nd Gear in mine, now I have the stronger version.

Here is a pic of what I mean.. strong one on the left, broken weak one on the right.
Mine looked just like this..

Great picture showing the damage of what you can expect when you completely lose 2nd gear.

Wow, that looks pretty bad. Thanks for the picture. Anyone tell me how much a new 2nd gear costs? Also, I've heard something about the spot welds breaking and letting 2nd just float there with no shaft engagement. That sound plausible?

That true with the T5 2nd gears. The early design T56 2nd gear ripped the small teeth off of them just like in the picture above.

You can find people selling them in the classifieds or from some of the Sponsors. I got my new one for $75.

Sorry, just saw this question. You don't HAVE to rev match it, but when trying to drop to like 3rd or 2nd or 1st, it goes in A LOT easier when you rev match.

Yea, what I was saying, is that by having to rev-match it, it tells me that the trans is still going INTO second gear, but not engaging power. I hope you know what I mean by that. If all the engagement teeth were gone, it wouldn't be able to get into second gear at all would it? You can still put it in second, no grind or anything, acts 100% normal, and the lever stays in second, just no forward drive. Sorry for all the questions, I am a complete trans newb, lol.

Yea if the teeth on second are completely gone then you will have nothing whether you rev-match it or just put it in. It will still go into the Gear, just no movement.
