a 300 hp shot will get you there pretty qwik. thats if you like seeing a trail of oil behind you after you hit it!

but seriously you will need more motor or a ls1 swap. the ls1 swap would most likely be your best option because it will gain the most hp for the $$. either way you will be spending around 4k in motor work alone and you would easily leave that truck behind by a lot! just be sure the transmission and rear will hold it all.

Yup, just do some kind of a swap and you'll get there. I'm guessing you have like a high 15 second car maybe? How fast do you want it to be?

Yes, listen to Joe. He's driven Honda's for the past 11 years. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to getting horsepower out of obsolete technology.

You're probably going to want 4 bolt main caps for 400RWHP. New MATCHING heads, cam, and intake.

There's a couple of cheap books you can read that have great info on gen 1 small blocks. John Lingenfelter: On Modifying Small Block Chevy Engines and Small Block Chevy Engine Buildups. Both are great reads for under $20 each and will have you on the right track to planning your build. You can find them at the links or at book stores like Borders.

If you decide on a swap, I bought a crate motor for my '91 at www.speedomotive.com. They were great, reasonably priced and I loved my 383.

Well you don't necessarily need to get an ls1 to make power with yours and I do not suggest getting an ls1 if you have very little experience with cars. I would buy one of those books like 91rs383 said and go from there, but I suggest you pull that engine out and put an engine with 4-bolt mains and a 1 piece rear seal for added strength. Good luck. You will be able to get 400 rwhp with a 350. Or buy a 383 crate engine.

get a set of vortec heads, edelbrock air gap intake, comp thumper hydraulic roller cam, and a good distributor and i guarantee you will out run a full size truck with a 305

Fisrt off, How many miles on the engine? Also to help you out a little bit send me the casting number on the back of the engine block on the driver side. Also the the numbers in the front of the blockpad on the passenger side. These are key things that that will let me know if your engine can handle the 400hp you want. Send me the info and we'll see what we can do. I used to be a gen1 guy but I saw the light with the lsx's.

Well, nothing beats cubic inches!! Find or build a 454/427/396 and drop that in. You should be good to go then!

why would he need a 4 bolt main block for 400hp? the two bolt block will do just fine and is easier to find. one piece rear main i agree with, so you can go with a roller cam. for the cost of the vortecs and then machining them to take over .450 lift, you can buy entry level aluminum heads, that let you run more compression, and probably flow better. and weigh half of what the iron heads do(plus they're bad *** and will get you chicks).

I said that he should get a 4 bolt main block because lets face it...he's not gonna stop at 400 and I thought it would be better for him to plan a little ahead.

Talking thanks for all the coments and for your help

your right i probably wont quit , but for know i want around 3 then 4 is what i want to get out of it eventually, but i would rather not swap being its the original motor , if i cant get out of it want i want, i would probably just make it as fast as i can and then for show, and give it to my grampa, and buy another one and start from there, once i same the money, without doing a swap what do you think i could get out of my 78?

It looks like your setup isn't matched properly. Read Lingenfelter's book, you'll learn volumes. The single plane manifold in your pic is probably great for high RPM use with great heads, but propably costing you with stock heads and exhaust manifolds.

She looks nice BTW.
