it seems the bendix is not fully retracting form the flexplate causing contact.
Why rebuild it? There not that much. If your gonna replace it, smack it with a hammer to see if that unjam's the gear.

i will try that. 200 dollars at oreilly is 200 dollars I'd rather not spend if I don't have to. rebuild kits are 24.99 at autozone but the guy didn't know what they come with or anything about them.

btw how do you go about taking out the starter with the car sitting on ramps?
