Default General Corvette Knowledge

I need some help with some general Corvette knowledge. Call it research for something that I may buy in a couple of years. More questions to come.

Thanks in advance.

Which years did the C5 Corvette run?

Which motor did the base (base meaning non-Z06) model have (in terms of Liters and CI's)? What was the HP rating from the factory?

Which motor did the Z06 have? What was the HP rating from the factory?

What came on the Z06 as far as options that made it better-besides possibly a different motor?

Are there better years to buy a C5 then others?

Thanks for the info.

Can anyone tell me if the horsepower change was for real and when they did the change?

Hopefully I could get a Vette with the 400+ horsepower motor.

And is it possible to confirm the 345 horses that the ls1 supposedly put out?

Also, Im not very hip on the GM LS motors.

Is the LS6 a 5.7L block also?

What are the differences that make it go from an ls1 to an ls6?

All of the C5 Corvettes including the Z06 use the same block (5.7L).

The Z06 has the 243 cylinder castings which flowed better.

More aggressive camshaft.

LS6 Intake which outflows the LS1 intake.

Precats were deleted from the 2002-2004 Z06.

All C5 Z06 Corvettes were equipped with titanium exhaust. The most expensive exhaust ever bolted to a GM vehicle at $1200 per side retail.

Rear brake cooling vents on the Z06.

Z06 equipped with 3.43 rear end gears which were hardened.

Z06 transmission came with more aggressive ratios.

Mod Red interior (2 tone bright red & black) only available on Z06.

Stronger clutch and pressure plate.

No foglight option for Z06, stainless steel screens were factory installed in their place.

Z06 dash cluster ( gauges have the Z06 Logo).

Honestly if you can swing the Z06 get it. I miss my C5 Z06. Light, fast and you can pick one up for under 25k.

Yes the horsepower change was for real. Keep in mind that the HP ratings are at at the crank, and are pretty over-rated. 2001 was the first year that they brought the ZO6 back, and it was rated at 385hp (Actual dyno results for stock '01's being around 330-350rwhp). 2002-2004 is when they uped the rating to 405hp, and also added new ZO6 badges that say 405hp under the ZO6. (Actual dyno results for those cars I believe are in the 350-380rwhp range).

I'm not sure what the base LS1 corvettes dyno'd, but the 345hp rating is also at the crank so you get the picture.
