Default Is it SAFE to de-screen the MAF?

Is it ok to do this? Also, anybody else got any other small free mod tips?

Yes it's safe. There's a thread somewhere with a bunch of free mods like the TB coolant bypass, Lid freemod thing etc.

You're gonna get a lot of yes and no answers. As long as you have a good filter and the seal is tight on the lid you will be fine.

I did it on my car and i've had NO problems. i use a K&N filter and still havent had any problems. Other free mods i've done is the TB bypass, TB and MAF p/p, and the air box mod. all of which i've had 0 problems with and can feel a difference and gained bout 2-3 mpg more.

damn....that screen is not there to catch debris.....damn.....

its job is to straighten out airflow so the meter gets a better/more acurrate reading....

however our cars have a fairly straight shot from the lid to the maf so the screen is not needed....damn...i hate the internet ......sometimes......damn.....

Here you go, the screen on the stock MAF are used in order to control the airflow into the sensor. Because the route of air entering the MAF is on a straight path it should not be an issue, GM ended up (^^^^^) setting the newer stock MAF without even having a screen because of this. There you go! When in doubt pop it out!

You should ask this question in the tuning question. The answer is yes, you can, but should also re-scale your MAF table. It's not a must, but if the table is not re-scaled, your fuel trims will have to make up the difference. Again, not really a big deal, but is something that you should know.

IMO, the best reason to de-screen is when it becomes a restriction @ WOT. With tuning software & probably some hand helds, you can log MAP. If you see that MAP decreases, say during the last 500-1000 RPM before redline, then the MAF screen may be the restriction. Could also be the TB or intake. So, first upgrade the TB, then measure MAP, then remove screen if there is a drop in pressure. Also, from what I've measured, an 85mm TB & descreened MAF can flow up to 411 g/s @ 100 kPa MAP
approximately. Some cars will be a little more & some a bit less. Am sure there are cars pushing 512 g/s through an LS6 intake, but are probably losing vacuum (MAP) to do so unless boosted

fixed my problem. the weather stripping along the back of the lid came lose and was getting sucked up into the MAF. good thing it didnt come all the way off considering i just took the screen off. But i fixed the stripping and now it runs fine so my vote goes to...........go for it.

I just descreened mine. It worked out quite well. Whoever said the screen is there to catch stuff that gets through the air filter is very misinformed

Here is a video of a few different mods we did racing against one another in between the different mods. Descreening the maf gave me 3/4 of a car by the end of the quarter mile which is almost a tenth of a second.
