I'm just a bit skeptical because there have been tons of people that talk to a shop that says they can replace their rear no problem. Then when it comes down to it, they can't.

The dealer was originally going to attempt to repair mine because of the current economic situation, but no dealer in WA state has the right tools for the job. So the dealer went ahead and "upgraded" mine to the '06/07 version. Beware of shops that say that they can work on them, if dealers don't have the tools it's not likely a shop will.

I don't know if they have or not. They are familiar with the car since a few have gone through their shop of course. I guess if I blow this rear outside of warranty, yall will be the first to know who replaces it for me with something stronger. Futral is 5-10 min from me and Thunder Racing is in the next town over...I think between the two of them, someone can get it done.

I replaced my 3.73 with a 3.42 from a CTS. Basically, the ring and pinon gears from the SRX, CTS, and CTS-V interchange. You have the choices of 3.9, 3.42, or 3.23 in addition to your stock 3.73. The CTS-V limited slip differential housing also fits these ring and pinion sets.
My work was done by TPIS, who has a set of factory-issue supposedly dealer-only tools, and the shop manual. It is a bit tricky because you need to heat the throat of the rear gear carrier in oder to pull the pinion gear out. By the same token one should freeze the pinion and reheat the carrier to install the pinion. We checked the gear fitting/lap and found it just perfect. Getrag the makere of the rear does a very nice, very precise machining of the assembly parts, which I think in most cases probably will not require shims.
I think the 3.42 is a good gear for my driving, which is mostly highway cruise. Gas mileage is up maybe 1mpg.

I imagine the 3.73 is what really makes this car fun to drive, albeit with lots of shifting. But 4.10's? Obama is gonna show up at your house in a smart car and kick you in the junk!

Holy crap! I had no idea. They are in Prairieville which is the next town south of Baton Rouge. Futral is an "authorized retailer and installer" for Madman as well..makes sense now..haha. I might have to drop in on them one day on my lunch break.
EDIT: Isn't Madman's setup like $7k?
