Default first time out, and not close to what was expected

finally got the car done to go to the track and was happy that it didnt blow up, but unhappy about the times. here is my best run. da was 3900ft

60ft- 1.6496
330ft- 4.77798
1/8et- 7.4361
1/8mph-92.36
1000ft- 9.6733
1/4et- 11.6897
1/4mph-115.36

here is the list of mods

weight
basically gutted. still has a/c box and all the wires under the dash, everything else is gone that could be unbolted. has steel 6 point bar

suspension
some after market shocks (not sure of the brand), eibach lowering springs (about stock ride height after weight reduction), stock say bar, everything else is adjustable, strange chromoly drive shaft. nothing done to the front.

trans

th400 with brake
tci 10" 3600 stall

motor
stock flycut bottom end
polluter cam (almost identical to the trex)
dart 225 pro 1 heads
victor jr intake
750cfm carb
all supprting mods for head/cam/intake combo

rear
fab 9
3:70 gears
26" mickey's

as you can see there is something wrong. the tranny seemed to shift a little slow so i was thinking of have it rebuilt. im pretty sure the cause of it is the stall so i was thnking of going with a 8" ati one. any other ideas on what might be the problem. was hooking good so that has nothing to do with it.

Should be a stout setup, but the gear and converter seem slightly small. I use a 5200 converter with 4.10s (switching to 4.56 for motor) but mine is just a cam only setup. Are you leaving off footbrake? What RPM? Are you flashing the converter or pre-loading it? What RPM to you shift the motor at? I wouldn't say those are horrible times for your first pass on the setup.

the gear/tire setup was putting me at 6400 at the line. was leaving off the trans brake at 3400. still getting use to the gate shifter, but shifted pretty good on that run. shift at 6400 and finally shifts at 6800. i think that my tranny might be slipping as well as my converter being way to small (not to mention its a tci).

was not my first pass, was actually about my 6th pass. my a/f is pretty rich at 11.5 with 36 degree of timing, but getting that right wont knock off a second.

well beside the da being horrible, the sixty foot needs works, possible converter gear issue, and id figure out the tune.

good luck

that cam and heads probably aren't suited for each other and the stall speed is way too small and the tire probably needs to be a 28 and you may be spinning.

you should be ripping some good 60' times even in that DA off a transbrake

How fast are you expecting from your setup? When I read your mods I thought low to mid 11's. What did the car dyno at? The DA has to be worth at least a half second. You have some other changes that could net 3-5 tenths as well. Don't forget some seat time. It's amazing how much you can pick up with just a few weeks behind the wheel.

the head/cam might not be made for each other, but it should be making good power. i know the stall is really small for the application and that is why i ordered a 8" from ati. they said i need a 4900 stall, so thats probably the biggest issue. if i went to a 28" tire i would be going through the traps at at lower rpm and i dont want that.

I'd put a 4.10 in it now, even on the 26s

was looking at some calculators and i must have 4:10 gears. if indeed i did have 3:70s like i ordered it would have been at 5700 going through the traps. guess i will have to tear into it over the winter. to see what it actually has

Sounds like the fins may be laid over in the converter if it's slipping that many RPM. I would expect a stalled auto to cross close to 6000 RPM's with your setup and MPH. I would also work on that AFR and play with the timing a bit. I don't have any experience with carbed LS1's but 36 degrees sounds high to me. My car will not pick up with anything over 29 degrees and starts to slow down at 34 and up.

ati said i was driving through the converter. should be a whole new story when that shows up.

i plan on messing with the tune this weekend. not to much info out there on the carb ls1 so im going from scratch. went with 28 degrees and it really slowed down. will get the tune dialed in this weekend. the next race after that isnt for a few weekends so im getting the tranny rebuilt when its out. guess i will go from there.

To rehash, if you trying to calculate your rear end gear based off RPM and MPH remember to take into account your converter slip. Sounds like you are on the right track with your new converter purchase. I would run a 4.10 gear with a 26" tire, if you are going with a taller tire I would probably numerically step the gear up as well. 36 degrees total timing seems like a bit much, play with it at the track and see how the car responds.

It will be interesting to see how the car responds to the new converter. Keep us posted.

went to the track this weekend and played with it a bit more. this was my best run on Saturday at 2500ft (very good air for here in august)

1.6109 60ft
11.3985 1/4 et
118.83 mph

cant read the 1/8 mile on my slip. i got the air/fuel closer but was at 12.3 on that run. took the timing down to 34 and it did nothing, so i left it there. car seems to be shifting alot fast now, so that makes me happy. guess we will see what it does with the 8" converter and 4900 stall

Good to talk to you at the track. Car looks great. Makes me wonder some times. Let me know when you are going back. We'll be down there on most race weekends - but not with mine

good talking to you as well. if that converter comes in time i should be racing friday, saturday, sunday. if i dont get it in time i will be there saturday, but wont race until sunday. summit screwed around for 5 days ordering it, so i wont know until tuesday if it will be here in time or not.

you should bring your beast down to my place and will get her wired up and running for joey to tune. could have it to the track by the 29th race for some shake down runs. then you can run in the quick 8 in cedar falls . i just want to see that thing run before the end of the year.

How could you be driving through a 10" 3600 stal converter with your power level??
Give me a break!
I agree with the 8" and a high stall with your power, maybe 5000 stall.
I personally think Neal Chance converters are AWESOME and Marty over there will spend time going over every detail of your set up with you to get the best vert for your combo.
Just to give you an idea how much a converter can help or hurt you, with my old 408 I went from a Yank 3600 stall 9" vert to the Neal Chance 8" 4400 stall vert and took nearly 1 full tenth off my 60' alone. Over 8 hundreths and I mph'ed better too.
