Default best traction without getting DR's

2000 B4C A4. My current mods are lid, LT's, true duals, mail order tune, LCA relos. The tires i have now are 275/35/r18 falkin raptors on 18 inch c5 wheels. They are a little more then half worn i would say. They hook terribly. i sometimes have to let out of it when i hit second because the rear starts sliding out on a smooth street. I was thinking of getting some Nitto 555's. I need to get more then 10k out of a set of tires though. So, i ditched the drag radial idea. i need a street tire that hooks as well as possible. Any suggestions?

just to clear things up, the nitto 555 is not a drag radial. the 555r's are the drag radials. look into the goodyear gsd3's, the bfgoodrich kdw's are popular, and the regular 555's are decent, lots of options out there if $ isn't a factor.

Normally a tire with a low compound tread rating is going to be made out of a softer compound ( better traction ) and a harder compound tire ( higher tread rating ) is not going to give you good grip with a high rear wheel hp car. Bridgestone, yokahoma's etc. are about the cheapest and last about 2years. Check out tire rack.com and do your home work.

toyo r888

let me put this into perspective for you.
i also used to have the riken raptors and the car would sometimes go sideways shifting into 2nd on dry pavement just like yours. this is with a4 3.23 gears, just a catback and a lid basically.

i throw in a 3600 2.5 str stall and it was like driving on ice above like 1/3 throttle from a stop. throw on falken azenis - they cornered great, but still lighting them up.
so then i switch over to R compounds. and i put on kumho victoracer v700 - awesome tires, like superglue on corners when they're warmed up and when they are warmed up i could punch it to 1/2 - 3/4 throttle from a stop and get off the line (just a little tire slippage, but the not so bad kind where you're still moving).

then i threw on toyo r888's after reading everything i could about them.
i now hook up better with the r888's and the stall than i did when i had the raptors and the stock stall... and they stick to the pavement like jbweld even if i haven't tried to warm them up.

i can't be the only one with these tires.. anyone else have them?

BFG KDW's 1.8 60' out of my 18's. What more could you really ask for out of a street tire?

The Nitto NT05 is the same tire as the Toyo R888. They are manufactured together, and are identical except for tread pattern. They are both great tires and will hook very well, but they are an R compound so dont expect any realistic life out of them.

You arent going to get as good traction from a street tire as you would from an R compound, and I think you know that. However there are some great summer tires (street tires) that will have great life and perform very well especially cornering. I dont know what your price range was, but I look into Pirelli P-Zeros Michellin Pilot Sport 2's, Ive been VERY happy with both of these. My Pirelli's actually hooked almost as good as the Nitto 555r's I had before them. If you can afford them, id say go for either one.

no

nt05 is a max performance street tire with a 200 treadwear rating
r888 is a competition tire with a 100 treadwear rating

if you go to either manufacturer website, you'll see that nitto separates the nt05 from their competition tires (like the nt01) and groups them with the street tires.
toyo has the r888 as a competition tire.

you might be thinking of the NT01?

You're right on what you're saying. But I just want to add, that basing how long or little a tire will last on their treadwear isn't the best. Tire manufactures don't use a set way of determining the treadwear. So, one tire company may say their treadwear is a 200, and another 300, while they may be very well the same.

Your right, I was confusing the NT05 with the NT01, disregard what I said.

I went with the Nitto 555's in a 275/35/r18. I had the NT05s on order. I do alot of diving. Needed to get those extra miles for my buck. I havent got to drive it yet but they look sticky. Im sure theyre going to be fantastic compared to the pretty worn riken raptors.

You won't get the same life out of a sticky tire like the NT05 as you would from a good summer tire. I don't know much about the NT05 but I assume its an R-compound? I'm sure traction is great but if your looking for long life I wouldn't go with an R-compound. Do you hit the track at all? Or are you just looking for a tire that will hook up on the street?

The NT05 does not have R compound rubber. Like previously mentioned, the NT05 is a max performance summer tire. This type of tire offers more grip than an ultra high performance summer tire and is very popular among SCCA members.

i tested my Nitto 555's yesterday. i was very impressed. I could hold the brake bring it up 1200 rpms and then mash the gas without spinning. The only traction loss i had was a tiny chirp when i hit second. The NT05 would have probably been a little overkill for my car.
