Default Ported LS6 oil pump... worth it?

On an L33?

I plan on running an L33 5.3L Ls6 intake, TSP 228r cam, TSP pushrods and PAC beehive springs. Is the $150 oil pump really recommended? Or is the truck oil pump the same, better, or worse then the LS6 pump?

thanks for any input (tried searching, all that comes up is FS threads)

Jeff

I'm happy with my ported ls6 pump from TSP. 40 psi at hot idle and 80 psi at 6,000 rpms. It was worth the money IMHO.

How many miles are on the 5.3 your building?

If its anymore than 50K I would go ahead and put a new pump on it just for insurance.

$150 > New motor

My opinion

It's not a bad idea especially if your current oil pump has a lot of miles. However a ported LS6 pump doesn't flow more oil since it's a positive displacement pump. The porting simply reduces friction basically making the pump consume a little less power from the crank. The higher oil pressure is from putting a different pressure relief spring inside the pump.

I had mine changed with a cam swap, motor has 65k on it. It's cheap insurance.

I would say no, you dont need a pump for a motor with only 4k miles on it.

I think that most LS1's benefit from an oil pump, regardless of mileage.

Now upgrading it, that's a different story
