My H/C LS1 goes BOOM!
I destroyed my H/C LS1 at the track in 4th gear at 5500.. Sound like RRRRRAAAAAAaaaaa.....(smokkeeeeeee) The engine was dynoed at 420rwhp & 410lbs. I know I was beating it everytime I was behind the wheel but I was expecting more than 2k miles on the new H/C setup. Bought the car at 60k miles and dead at 71k... The #5 just disapear! Here's some pictures.
Intake view
#5 side head
other side
I supposed valve have been bent because it were block by somes bottom end pieces
Rod and piston
Someone rebuilding heads said that my heads are good, just need to change bent valves.
What cause this failure ?? piston, cylinder, rod bolts(katech)
So, I need a new engine.. I think about a LQ9 408. I supposed I need a new oil pump, but water pump, lifters, cam are still good I think.
Tell me what do you think! thanks !

Ouch... well if you're going to do it do it big. Nice work man.
Those heads don't look okay to me. You're going to have to do more than simply swap out the bent valves. That chamber needs to be repaired.
As to what caused it I have no idea. It just let go. You'll need a new engine at this point.

Damn that hurts. Thats the reason I'm debating putting heads on my high mileage LS1. It seems like in most engine failures the heads end up getting hurt pretty bad.
BTW I dont know to much about head repair but I sure hope you can get it fixed because heads are a big investment.

I am sorry to see anyone and feel your pain (been there and done that) and hate to see anyone mess there ride up. I see you have 420hp and 410tq so you ahd it on the dyno and I also see in your signiture you have 5.3 heads which if I remember correctly have a smaller compustion chamber which bumps up the compression. The Texas Speed Torquer 2 Cam you have is 232/234 dur 595/598 lift which I think makes the piston closer to valve clearance and I don't see any type of injector in your signiture which I would think you would be super lean especially since you have a 1999 model 26lb injector which should have been maxed out at 400hp or a hair less than that. My guess is you were SUPER, SUPER LEAN and the valve kissed the piston on top of that also. As far as reusing the head goes I wouldn't but thats me. Good Luck getting it fixed and I wish you the best of luck.

Youch that's some pretty healthy damage there. Sorry to hear your having bad luck! Is only 1 head destroyed? We can probably work you out a pretty good deal on a replacement just to get your heads back together. If you need a short-block give us a call, we'll help any way we can! It always sucks to see a stock short-block die! Makes me feel bad for the one in my engine dyno bay with over 200 pulls on it!!

The heads need to be desassemble, clean, changing bent valve, removed and removed burrs in the chamber and mill the head. This is what the head builder said to me.
The car have been tune by a local tuner on a dyno, a/f was 13.5 because the wide band was after the cat. The tuner said you can tune 1 point leaner when the wide band is after the cat. The timing was conservatory because I run on 91oct here in canada. Sorry I didn't write I have 42lbs Lucas injectors on stock fuel pump. PTV clearance wasn't check on the installation because many people on the board done this combo without problem.
When I bought the car had detonation problem with the Diablo tune, I dont know how long the last owner run it on detonation but maybe the piston was a little bit weak.
I still dont know if I change the heads for L92 heads for my LQ9 with a L76 intake.
