Confused!Help!
ok i have a 2002 z28 auto. came factory with 3.23s. it was the 3 series. ok i bought a another rear-end, it was out of a LT1 car, so i had to change the backing plates. well when i took the cover off of the LT1 rear-end i noticed it was a 2 series, but it had 3.23s in it also (which is weird). well i had it rebuilt by someone else with motive 3.73s. i think the kit came with a 3 series gear and i had them put in a 2 series carrier..... Does this sound right? It does whine pretty loud. Will they even fit though?

The gears themselves have to stay with their corresponding posi unit (2 or 3 series). Give you an example, A 2 series auto 2.73 car ordered 2 series 4.10s from summit (thick). They turned out to have sent 3 series 4.10s (thinner). There was no way this could have worked. We had a good 3 series torsen posi in the shop, so we bolted his new gears to the torsen and swapped the whole chunk it and it set up fine. That avoided him having to send the gears back and us doing all the work over. Now he has an auto with 3 series carrier and 3 series 4.10s.

its physically possible but anyone who is setting up the gears would see that. You cannot shim it enough to create a decent pattern without the gears rubbing so technically they wont fit.

which gears will rub, my pinion gear was rubbing, it was 20 thousands to deep without any shims, but the ring gear wasnt. It had the paper test done to it. Run a 1 inch wide sheet of paper through the gears to see if it makes an impression but without cutting the paper. then you know the gears are rubbing

yeah i just sent the dimensions to my installer, yeah are 3 series gears in a 2 series carrier. He set the rearend up according to the specs that came with the gears, well they were the wrong gears.... So i dont even see how it is driving. Looks like the rearend has to come back out....

The only thing that is confusing is that the gears that came out of it were GM 3.23s which mean it should have been a 3 series carrier...does anyone know what the dimensions for the "thick gears" are suppose to be?

alright i figured it out, i thought i had to 2 carriers, because i didnt know they made 2 different type 3 series. They make the torsen type which is a gear style, and a auburn type which is the clutch style. So it turns out that i have a the right gears, but he has to be re set up.

Ah ok. i was thinking that the lt1s got the auburn and the ls1 got the torsen. Because the one that came out of my 02 car was a torsen. The LT1 rearend had a auburn
