Default Ls1 oil pump install questions!?? Clearances

I have a 2001 Ls1 and I am reinstalling the oilpump after pining the crank snout for my ati damper with the distributor and carb conversion with the new GM front cover...

My question is installing the pump before torquing it to spec I have seen some individuals installed two .002 feeler gauges on either side before torquing to insure proper clearance from the oilpump excentric and oilpump gear. Then, I have seen people just center it up and then torque...

Any ideas I do not want to chew up the pump and have further difficulties...

Thanks Mark Tisdale

Since the oil pump gear itself is totally floating, I don't think it would even be possible to center the assembly. It is more likely that the thin feeler gauges were only used to help line up the gear to get it on the eccentric on the crank as they can be tricky to get now and then.
