Noob question here...but what is a rear end? The whole rear axle?

I will assume you are serious.

The entire rear axle assembly between the two rear tires. ALL F-body rear ends totally suck as a result of small diameter gears that are prone to breaking when the motor is hopped up. They even break on stock motors more than they should.

GM did this to reduce cost and stretch MPG's.

The housing, the axles inside of it, the center cap with pinion yolk, and the gears inside of it = the rearend. Brakes and brake lines are attached to the rearend.

He means all F-body STOCK rearends. Aftermarket rearends that are made for these cars are usually really stout. The one I got from Midwest Chassis is a TANK, good for up to 800hp I think.
