Can I use MLS head gaskets?
I was looking into it and I have seen that earlier year LSx engines cant use the MLS gaskets because of some kind of recession at #3 or #6 cylinders on the heads. I looked at my heads and there is no such thing on them but they were on the list I seen (853s).
My heads are from a 99' LS1 (853 casting)
There is no recession on them... should I be good?
Are there any pictures out there of this recession?
Thanks
Mike

Here is a picture comparing heads with and without the notch. The top head has the notch which is in front of (exhaust port side) of the third combustion chamber from the left. The notch is basically half an octagon. Both of these heads are 853 castings but only the earlier castings have the notch. As long as the notch is not there it is fine to use the MLS gasket.

Thanks for that picture, really clears things up. There is nothing like that on my casting's, the heads didnt have MLS gaskets installed though so this should be an upgrade.
