Default New steering rack install.....small issue....

I just finished installing a new rack in my 97 TA. It was a shockingly simple task. I followed the instructions in the service manual to bleed the system. Then took the car for a drive. It turns to the left normally, but it's difficult to turn it to the right, almost like there is no power assist...or very little.

I jacked the car up and bled the system again, and it seems to be a bit better, but still not like turning to the left.

Anyone know what this is? Is it a problem with the rack? Or do I still have air in the system? The pump makes no weird noises.

Any help would be appreciated!

You need to have the car aligned after you install a new steering rack!

Your Toe is going to be way off, and your steering wheel is probably not center as well... You should go to your local shop that has an alignment rack and request an alignment. You should then be good to go.

The rack need to be centered with the wheels. Are you sure you have the gear centered? (Same number of turns from side to side?)

Yup. It was centered. I had no power assist when turning to the right. I ended up taking the rack out and putting the old one back on and now it's fine again. I am thinking so
ething is wrong with the new rack.

Sounds like the rack was not properly rebuilt...if it was a bleeding issue it would have the same problem in both directions.

Thanks for the info. I agree, the rack was messed up..the old one works just fine (except the slop in the steering....maybe I can adjust it out???).
