Default T56 Swap into 67 Impala BBC

Hey all,
new member here. Seems like this site is very informable in alot of different aspects. Really, the only information I am looking for at this time is buying, building, installing T56 into a 67 impala. I have looked around the internet and I am not too sure if anyone has done this except for camaros and novas. I'm sure its not much different.

Has anyone had any experience in installing T56's in Muslce Cars? I think I read an article in Chevy high performance mag, that someone sold a swap kit? I would like any advice anyone could give. Good idea or bad? Also this would be going into a car that usually is equiped with Th400, powerglide, or 4 speed muncie with mech. clutch not hydraulic. The car will also have a 427 BBC. not an LS series engine.

Someone makes a flywheel for this swap right? Im really trying to put together a parts list so I can keep my eyes open for a good deal. Just like to be educated before I buy so I dont spend money on stuff I dont need.

Thanks for any help!
Adam

The LT1 T56 has been used for that, there is a Flywheel made for a 2-piece Rear Main, some companies make a Bell Housing for that aswell.

There are two ways to do this. One, you can get a conversion flywheel and use the Latemodel LT1 clutch, pressure plate, and hydraulics along with the LT1 style transmission and bellhousing. Centerforce makes a flywheel for a 454 i know, but I'd say they have one for a 427 and old sbc stuff as well and spec has conversion flywheels as well. You would have to mount a hydraulic master with this setup.

Two, you can buy an adapter and extened pilot bushing that will allow you to bolt an LS1 style t56 behind the old muncie style 4 speed bellhousing. The adapter has a tob sleeve that will allow you to use all the original 4 speed linkage, fork, and clutch/flywheel. We have the adapter for sell here: http://www.tick-performance.com/tick...rts/#hardparts

The website says SBC only but it will work with a big block as well.

And if the shifter location is too far back as it mounts on the t56, Keisler makes a relocation kit that will position it where the access plate on top of that transmission is...probably moving it about 5" forward. Abotts Cable X box can be used to convert the digital speed signal of the t56 to a cable drive for your speedo to function. Other than that you'd just have to make a crossmember and have your driveshaft shortened and wire up the reverse lockout. Does a 67 have a two piece shaft like the older impalas?

Its basically the same exact process as a Camaro or Nova. I personally like the LS1 unit with the adapter plate and using the factory style bellhousing and clutch linkage setup. I would not use the hydraulic crap unless you absolutely have to.

thanks for all the help guys. Im really leaning towards the factory clutch setup, stock bellhousing, adapter plate relocation kit electric to mechanical speedo etc.

I also started to look into a TKO 600. Everything I guess is like installing a muncie, so I have to weigh the price difference and horsepower capabilities.

Thanks again.

Default Update 2020

did you ever complete the T56 swap on your impala? I have the same exact car but it’s a 396
Was there any transmission tunnel clearance issues? Mine currently has a th400..
What all did you need-thanks
