Not sure it'd be wise considering a rear end is $250 and the extra one I have isn't in the best of shape. Heading out now to get the exhaust, install it, then go to Irwindale.

Autos are much more forgiving on the stock 10-bolt. Just do it...

Didn't make it. Car overheated (but not into the red zone!) due to bad radiator cap, and leaking radiator coolant return hose, and fans that aren't turning on. Jerry and Adam went out my way and helped figure out the various problems.

So the cap was bad? Are the temps holding now?

Yeah missed it, but glad we got Lee's car running, pretty easy after pressure test to find the leak.

And I gotta give it that car has some ***** now, we went at it on a roll and he kept up, I had jerry in my car , but thats a combined weight of maybe 550 or 600 lbs in my car so I don't think that was too much. Now time to fix th fans, Lee did you call george? something is messed up in an electrical connection somewhere or the pcm isn't turning on fans for some reason, shoot we should just wire it up to be manual fans. LOL.

Cool, I told him to tell one of you guys to take a pressure tester out there. Manual fan switches would be an easy fix, but I'd rather him have it working the way it should. I think it will be something simple like repining a few wires in the harness connections on the passenger side shock tower.

Not bad for a completely stock LS1. I told him he needs a lid.

The temp has been holding below 210 on my cruise up to Landers and back, so I am going to attempt to go to Perris and pick up the Y pipe. Again. I never heard or saw the fans turn on but then again it never got above 210. No coolant leakage after I turned the car off either.

What happened before was probably the coolant return line was leaking so I was low on coolant, combined with the radiator cap not holding pressure. I sure hope the fans work properly - we'll see.

yea that gauge doesn't really tell you the actual temp, it just tells you when it hits operating temp. if you hook up a computer to your car you will see what i mean. my gauge holds right below 210 but reads about 180 with a computer.

Yup, dummy gauge readings...someone in GM's idea. The '98 is the last Fbody with real gauge readings. You can see the temp sensor has three prongs, where the '99-'02 has only two. As Thomas stated, hooking up a scanner to your car will tell you what the real temp is.

i didn't even know 98 had a working gauge. why would they change it anyways? did they save a few cents per car?

I think it was to stop all the idiots from going to the dealerships crying about how their car is overheating when they get off the freeway and watch their car go from 180 to 235*F only to tell them, "That's normal." You'd be surprised how many threads there are in the LT1/LT4 section about, "My car is running hot," or, "Why am I over heating?"
But in '99 the started the dummy gauges, ones the car warms up it sits at 210 and never moves as long as the car is within operational temp range.
