Default Need help choosing a cam...

Hi,I got a 98 z28 and was wanting to put a cam in it. Its a daily driver with 87k on it and stock heads. The current mods are 3600 ss yank stall, drag radials, 3:23 gears, dyno tune, full slp intake, and slp catback. I was needing help in choosing the best cam for this setup I like that lopey sound and all that but also want the best one for my setup. Any help will be greatly appreciated...Thanks

you will want headers for sure and more than likely a ls6 intake. now for a cam i would get a custom cam from either pat g or pred-z. pred-z specd my cam out but its not in yet

Do you daily drive it? If so I would look at a F11 from Futral, if not check out the F13 & 14.

I have a TR230 (230/224-111) that would rock!

Its brand new, Im selling mine for $300. Let me know.

It would work awesome with stock heads and give you that idle. It would get you about 400rwhp too!

If anybody can tell you what would be the "best" cam for your setup, they would be one rich SOB...

What do you want it for?

track times
dyno numbers
torque monster
pull like a bat outta hell on the top end
how much money do you have to spend on supporting mods (ie heads, gears, intake, etc etc etc)
do you have a ET goal/hp goal (not that this matters)

Give us a general idea of what you want the cam to perform like and we will give you a general idea of what cam might suit your needs and match your setup.

For a stock head LS1, I like the reverse split pattern cams. They generally have good TQ curves. If you can afford a set of aftermarket heads, I would suggest a 22x/22x .58x .58x @ 112-114 lsa. These smaller duration cams are your best bet and make great power while maintaining drivability like stock.

Would that work well with stock manifolds?

Ive been hearing alot that a cam is kind of pointless without Lt's. The more i think about it that does make sense. Should i just do Lt's and maybe a ls6 intake and see where i can go from there? Or are there some cams out there that give you nice power/tourque and that lopey idle with stock heads and manifolds? I currently run 12.5s with the car. The guy before me clamied 12.3 with a real good launch,11s would be nice. Thanks again for all the help/replies

To be honest, don't even bother with a cam until you get longtube headers. It will only choke it up. You can pick up a set of Pacesetters non-coated for cheap.

Taking into consideration where you live, I would get coated.

Or if you have the cash, just get some stainless and never worry about buying another set...
