Question APS Turbo Failures

Please only vote if you have first hand experience with an APS turbo failure (do not vote for somebody else).

Just wanted to see if there are any trends. Too many threads for me to keep up with.

Edit: Had the poll revised to get a better feel for the APS failure drama. Thanks for the help Patrick.

I did this long time back and many people voted that didn't even have an aps kit some didn't even have f bodies! Poll was useless.

I didn't vote yes but did recieve an internally cracked aps turbo that let coolant go into my oil. I have been running oil only cooling to both turbos since not sure which one has the crack. I wasn't getting any oil in my coolant though.

The oil cooling is critical the water not as critical. I have about 4000 miles on my
kit so far they are still working. I checked drivers side for shaft play seemed fine short while ago ,should have checked passenger but didn't. Not hearing any funny sounds of the blades rubbing or seeing any clouds of smoke.

You should have asked people that said yes to maybe say what boost level they were running. I am running 7.5ps the gate springs right now. I won't likely be boosting up till near end of october right before put car away but then again the roads are cold around then and my car is handful at 7.5psi.

That's what the "other - please specify" is for

99ta - defective from the get go is a bummer. Good point on the boost level.

LOL Looking back ,,,,my turbos were going bad before i ever even got her into boost and had it tunned LOL The car was smoking which i thought was my new forged engine breaking in and didnt change till i changed out the first turbo and instantly half my smoke disappeared. Also, my turbo exhaust housings bottoms have been wet since day one, which i thought was maybe the nature of the beast LOL Boy was i wrong. I think a good poll would be to pull everybodys username thats bought a kit and let them chim in as to weather there turbos are still alive or not and if smoking. That way you get a better picture of the turbos in general

My driver side turbo blew apart early on link to thread, after alot of hassle, being accused of not know what I was doing installing the kit, and paying $250+for shipping I received a new turbo from APS, I ran for about 1 year on the wastegate springs and when I finally fixed the wimpy inlet hose and turned the boost up they went till yesterday (about 2 months) and my car is now smoking so bad it is crazy. I am going to have them rebuilt here local and go from there. I wish I had the money to upgrade to a larger set but right now that is out of the question.

My passengers side went bad after a couple thousand miles, if that. I bought a couple TD06H 20G mits replacements from a place in Japan called Kando Dynamics. They sell these on E-bay and they were less than $400. ea. w/shipping when I bought them a little more than a year ago. I replaced the bad one and have kept the other in case I need it. Pain in the *** but you do what you have to do, APS sure isn't doing anything to help. Good luck to all in this situation!!!

Big Bird why don't you clarify your post a bit . What do you mean water side is screwed.
On mine when installed it put coolant right into the oil but no oil in coolant. So ran them oil cooled only for 4000 miles and so far they are still working. As said I have two kando dynamics that Lowbird got as back ups but will upgrade to LG or similar over winter.

do not know the mileage but I was maxing the turbos out at 13lbs of boost. I bought the car less than a year ago. The aps kit was already on it. I have put less than 3,000 miles on the car since I have had it. My passenger side turbo started to leak on the exhaust side. It looked like a mack truck dumping diesel into the atmosphere every time I started the car. The car is now all apart getting larger turbos, cam and injectors.

I have 2 yrs and over 25k miles on the set-up. It just started smoking this year but only does it once in a while. Not all the time. So I will probably pull the turbo's this winter and have them gone through to see if everything is OK or not.

Stock 346 and stock 7psi.
