NEW YORK — DJ AM, the sought-after disc jockey who became a celebrity in his own right with high-profile romances and a glamorous lifestyle and survived a plane crash just months ago, was found dead Friday at his apartment. He had a history of drug problems.

Police found a crack pipe and prescription pills in the Manhattan apartment, according to a law enforcement official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. Paramedics had to break down the door to the apartment before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweatpants, in his bed at about 5:20 p.m. (2120 GMT), the official said.

A friend had called police to say he was unable to get into the home in the trendy SoHo neighborhood. There was no evidence of foul play, and a medical examiner will determine the DJ's cause of death.

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had talked openly about past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs, but he claimed he had been drug-free for years, even swearing off cigarettes.

His spokeswoman, Jenni Weinman, said the circumstances surrounding his death were unclear. She pleaded for privacy for his family.

In October, MTV was to debut his new reality show, "Gone Too Far," in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abusers. In a recent interview with the AP, he talked about holding a crack pipe for the first time in years for the show and said he felt as though he had an angel on his shoulder for surviving so much turmoil.

Last year, he was badly hurt in a South Carolina plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured rock musician Travis Barker.

MTV did not have an immediate comment on whether the show would air.

He lived through a plane crash just to die from drugs...sad. Guy was definitely a huge inspiration to me when I was DJing. He was simply EPIC.

I hate to hear about any young man dying, but a crack pipe and prescript. meds? He got what he was asking for. Case closed.

I wouldnt be ignorant enough to pick one up in the first place, especially if I was rich and famous. Shit kills me (no pun intended) to see these people that have a life most people would die for (lol a little bit intended) and they just throw it away.

Yeah but Ecstacy? I find that hard to believe that you can develop a PHYSICAL need for MDMA. I'm pretty sure it's been a proven fact that you cannot. Quote me if I'm wrong but I studied the shit for a year or so. I just find that hard to believe ... I mean yea it's a fun drug but I don't think you can physically do it.

For everyone saying he was a drug addict, some more information has come to light.

He was 11 YEARS sober at that point. They said it was a combination of him going through tough shit (PTSD-ish) from the plane crash coupled with his GF breaking up with him. Looking like a planned suicide.

I feel bad for the dude.

I hear that, sympathy for some one who OD's is like sympathy for some one who dies playin russian roulette, they know the risks and yet they can't put down the gun except people who OD have usually been playing for a lonng time and its pure stupidity. its not really the same w/ suicide tho, I mean allot people do it for no good reason, but some people just have it really rough and its sad they can't find peace in the world. if this was a planned suicide then I don't feel bad for the guy 1 bit cause surviving a plane crash and girl problems is def not a good reason.

I feel bad for the dude.I remember hearing him on Loveline with Dr. Drew.
From what I heard on there he seemed like a decent fellow.
IIRC he recovered from being a meth addict. That's tough stuff.
I feel bad for his family and friends.
He was real young too.

nope and I have not ever smoked crack, meth and all the other bullshit he did either WAY BEFORE the accident.

And I am in the military, I guarantee I know way more people who have/are suffering from PTSD and none of them want to kill themselves. Some of them want to kill other people, but not themselves LOL.

Like I said before, wont get any sympathy from me being a drug addict that killed himself. Have fun burning for eternity!

And another thing it is so freaking hilarious how people are all sad about c list celebrities dying from things that joe the plumber dies from everyday and nobody gives a shit about.

My cousin was murdered last year, shot to death in Houston by two lowlife thugs, after returning from his third tour of iraq. Did you hear about that on the news?

^ i remember you posting about that happening last year

also, alot of drugs amplify your imagination and shit, so that meth and other shit he was doing before and after the crash/gf shit couldve messed his brain up pretty good and his withdrawals overcame his ability to control himself by amplifying his feelings.

Well, he didn't mix together horrible music for people to jump around to.

That first video you linked looked like the least amount of fun one could have. Loud horrible sounds that are supposed to be music? check. way too many people crammed into way too small of a place? check. some guys sweat, funk, and junk on you? check.

No wonder he OD'd you'd have to be high to enjoy that.

right...because everyone that ever goes to any club NEEDS to be high. Obviously the people going to a club probably enjoy the music that is being played there. I find it hard to believe that someone needs to be high to tolerate something they like? Lol, I doubt he spent years mixing together tracks of a genre he hated. I love how people are oblivious to the fact that music is the most subjective interest around.

I'm friends with one of the biggest dj's in south Philly, and he is pretty much high 24hrs a day. lol I've done some side work with him and met a lot of people in the industry. Weed and Iphones are pretty much the industry standard in the Dj world.:smokin2:

While I can say there are drugs floating around, as a former DJ I never used them and I know plenty who haven't.

Everyone who owns an Fbody has a mullet.
Everyone in the military kills babies.
Everyone who voted for Obama is on welfare.
Everyone who voted for McCain hates black people.
Everyone involved in the club industry uses drugs.

Well, he was probably such a good DJ because he was taking drugs and was hooked. Drugs can expand the creative side of your mind. If he was always sober he probably wouldn't have had a succesful music career.

It's a catch 22 for alot of great musicians that build their careers on mind altering drugs. Do the drugs you risk overdosing but have creative music, don't do them you may need to find a new profession. Yes I am stereotyping, I am sure there are some that make it without dope too..

Years back - I just know when I smoked weed I would get into either playing the keyboard and guitar for hours, sober I never even looked at the two instruments..

Just a thought to ponder on..

All those 70's classic rock bands were all high on something and busting out incredible new sounding music, (Led Zep, Ozzy, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hedricks, Dillan, Greatful Dead, etc..) that era was some of the best rock music ever created.. Hmmm? I wonder why that is?

Some of the best musicians in the world seemed to be hooked on something, even today... (Look at Elvis and Michael Jackson whom were both junkies and died from it)...

Thats such a stupid ass thing to say, that doing drugs will make you more creative.......druggies would be the most creative people in the world if that was true, so I guess im going to go get high and be able to pump out some classic albums like Dark Side of the Moon and Sgt.Pepper. The 60-70's rock bands were a totally different era, even mainstream sober artist were coming up with classic tunes. Anyone that thinks drugs will make them the next Jimi Hendrix is a tool, some people just have natural TALENT

G-mex, unless you've taken drugs and smoked weed I don't think you will ever understand. I'm not saying go out and do drugs and become the next rock star. I'm just saying some specific drugs can help open up creativity. It's a proven medical and scientific fact and not stupid..

Drugs will also destroy your life if and when you get hooked using them...

Cant speak for anyone else but I do my best drafting when I'm stoned. I wont touch any man made stuff but the green is fine by me. Even my teachers knew when I'd smoke b/c I pay more attention especially to detail. I was told as a child I was A.D.D. & they gave me retilin(sp?). It made me feel like crap & I quit taking it. then in 7th grade I statred smokin & noticed immediately that it increased my focus & made it easier to pay attention in class.

Things effect people differently.

I can work out, or chill when baked. It doesn't matter.. Working on cars is more enjoyable too when baked. I seem to have more patience and really focus on the task at hand.. Sober my mind drifts when wrenching.

Concerts and music is also better when toasted off the sticky green Cannabis...

The worst is, I find movies too be much more enjoyable when stoned. It's really dissapointing now to watch a movie sober. Ignorance really is bliss, for that reason alone I wished I never smoked.. Socially on the herb, I tend to be more withdrawn and mellow as apposed to the opposite when being drunk off alcohol...

Learning a musical instrument is key when heated too.

Also too much fine high level THC chronic herb and I can stutter at times and even mix words. The short term memory failure can happen too. I don't get stoned like that anymore.. That was years ago, no more Chronic for me..

These days I stay to with low THC mexican brick stuff a couple of times a week, the brain seems work much better that way and I can still get shit done.. I will give it all up one day soon though I think...

Stay sober people if you can. Realationships with chicks work alot better too by the way, unless she is a pot head as well..:smokin2:

it depends on what Im doing for me, if theres nothing going on or if I'm really beat it will make me just veg which I like at those times. but when it comes to work, I work harder, faster, longer, and smoother baked. if I'm going out and about, socializing etc I don't like to smoke tho. but I've gotta quit soon for this job I want..
