Default Will 4:10s work in my stock rear?

i really want 4:10s in my 00 ss but i have read alot of bad things about the stock rearends breaking. would it be safe to put 4:10s in my rear and not having to worry about stuff breaking if i dont do any 3k+ dumps of the clutch? i will probably be running nitto 555 tires next spring if that makes it any worst. And what kind of gains will i see over my stock 3:42s if i install 4:10s

Yes, the 410's will work. You will need to buy a paddle kit to install the gears. 3K dumps are fine if the tires are breaking loose. If you are hooking up ( not going to happen running street tires ) thats when things break. For having fun on the street 410's are way better than the stock 342's. My advice is don't do it! Save and buy a 12 bolt. I haven't broke mine........yet

Do it! Do it 'till it breaks! They're lots of fun.

I say go for it!! Do the 4.10's. Your car will fell like a different animal with them. You should be fine if your not at the track all of the time dumping the clutch at like 4K with sticky tires.

recomend against it unless you will run only stock tires. all it takes is a little wheel hop on the street with nittos at decent throttle speed to break it. i get a good bit of wheelhop even with all the suspension mods because the cold nittos are trying to hook. dont do it.

Is it just the gears that break, or the entire rear? In other words, if I were to get 4.10s and they broke, would I just have to replace the gears or the entire rear-end?

Thanks,
Josh

oh i've seen a few zexels break, throw a bolt right out the cover (t/a no less). WE were doing about 5mph pulling into this bbq joint and clunk and a 20 foot line of fluid till the rear end locked up.

Like I said, "do it 'till it breaks". You've gotta know that it will break eventually when putting them (4.10's) in. But the funfactor trade off may be worth it for some.

yeah just keep a spare rear end, or better yet a 9" at home, so when she blows, you won't be down for much.

and AAA+ , of course. they love fbody's

I agree you will be fine as long as you do not bolt on ET Streets. I ran my 4"10's with my Top End Package and Nittos for an entire season and did not break my stock rear.

Like others have said......yes they are WAY more fun, yes the gears can break, and yes the Torsen can break too (mine was with 3.42s!). Heck, anything will break if you beat it enough!

I have 4.11s with an Eaton posi, stud kit, & TA girdle. I have logged 12k miles on them now since the install in Aug. 2002. I run Kumhos. I have done numberoud hard accels, I LOVE freeway on ramps, I have done 2nd gear burnouts, however, all on stock street tires.

You need to decide what your longer term goals are (ie track racing, big power adders, etc), and whether you are going to try to get max accel through hard launches with tires that will hook.

So if I run street tires (my plan for the indefinite future), I should be fine? I sure don't want to have to replace my entire rear, as I can't afford a 9" or 12-bolt. I don't race on the street and only plan on going to the track a few times a year (still on street tires), but I do like to get on it fairly aggressively a few times a week.

Thanks for the help,
Josh

You could make your rearend live with 4.10 gears and a 700 hp CR5 motor. The question is, why would you want to? If you put those gears in, you are going to use your newfound torque advantage. If you add nitto's, you'll be just waiting for breakage.

I know of quite a few f-body guys who are breaking their rear ends, especially with M6's and LS1's. If you need more proof, just look how many guys are running decent track times on stock rears. Now look how many of them are on 10 bolts with manuals.

In the end, do what you want. Just be sure you can cover the check for the new rearend if tires + power are anywhere in the near future.

they are definitely a fun mod on the street, but the stock rear can break on you.

Hell, I just broke my stock pinion gear on street tires, not racing, driving on the street.

I think we've established 10x's over that yes, it is do-able, and yes, they most probably will break (though this does not deter some of us- myself included). Can we go beat another dead horse now?

My pinion bearing is howling. 6 months on the Hotcam. 14 passes at MAR on street tires at 30 psi, and 3000 miles since July 1. Still have the 3.42's. Power will kill it.
