How much can stock clutch handle?
How much HP/TQ can a stock clutch on a 02 SS Handle>? I'm wondering if i should change it out when i put my cam in. Mods on car are Bolt ons and a TSP 228R cam. Thanks.

You're gonna want an aftermarket clutch to hold cam-only power, especially if you don't want to risk hurting the transmission when the clutch starts to go. Anything more than bolt-ons and you should be considering an aftermarket clutch. I'm not saying it definitely won't hold, but most of the time they don't and when they start to go if you're shifting hard, they can cause problems.
If you're launching it at all with any kind of sticky tire, you're definitely going to need one. Just from highway rolls, mine started slipping big time around the 380rwhp mark with very little torque. You should be at least at that, if not a bit over it depending on your supporting mods with that cam and your drivetrain.

My '02 is putting 408hp & 389 tq to the ground with stock 10 bolt with 3.42's. It has run as quick as 7.79 @ 94 in the 1/8 & 12.36 @ 118+ in the 1/4

Didnt know anyone even ran a stock clutch on these cars anymore.
Just my opinion here, but theres no reason to run a stock clutch if youre not stock. You can, but not advisable.
They made the rear ends juuuuuust strong enough to handle stock power. What makes you think the clutches are any different?
Aftermarket is the way to go !

With the size of the disc in these cars, they should hold a decent amount of power. I've always wondered if it was the pressure plate that was weak or if the slave cylinder riding constantly on the pressure plate allowed it to slip under heavy load due to centrifical force.

Customers car, track last Friday:
Stock "replacement" from GM with @ 45K miles on it.
Bolt on car..exhaust, air lid, blah blah....
First pass, I tried (I was driving my customers car) a nitrous pass (100 shot). Clutch slipped pretty much teh whole way down teh track, went a 12.50 @ 118
We parked the car, and decided to run it on motor.
Car went 12.90 @ 111 on street tires. Clutch held 4 motor passes after I had smoked it on teh nitrous pass.
That being said, a Monster is going in the car tomorrow....

Yeah, the stocker didn't hold up to nitrous well at all. lol. Thanks Derrick you, made that very clear.
BUT even when my car was cam only it had some slippage issues. I would highly recommend you upgrade! Monster Stage 3 or 3.5

back in the day my stock clutch was good for about 20-30 11 sec passes pulling 1.56 -1.64 60ft.'s That was a heads and cam full weight set up. On the street it would have been fine cause it would have just spun the tires. Just run it till it does slip. If you don't go to the track much and don't plan on spraying the car or bolting on a set of slicks when you go don't worry about it
