Default different carrier in my stock housing.

i know i can swap the carriers no problem. i currently have the stock 2 series in there, but i want some motive 3.90's and they dont make them for the 2 series carriers. SO, when i do the swap do i reuse the caps in my stock rear or do i need to use the caps that come from the donor rear. i also assude that i will have to start from scratch when it comes to shims right.

And what about the 1/8" steel disks that are on the sides of the diff? dhich set do i use? the stock two or the two from the donor rear?

I assume you are getting a 3 series carrier from another differential to use with a set of 3.90 gears? If so, and you are using your existing differential housing, then you use your original caps on the stock housing in the car. The caps and housings are machined together, line bored like a block. The shims on the outside of the carrier bearings may or may not work. You wont know till you try and set your backlash. If you have any questions let me know.

Caps stay with the corresponding housing as jaws stated. Typically the steel discs are a good starting point for setting up a rear end with new bearings. If using old bearings I have found that there will be some slack during reassembly so I add a very thin shim in with the steel discs to pick up the extra slack in the old bearings.

A simple PM to the guy would have sufficed if you just wanted some credit...

I have never actually measured, but I have rebuilt a bunch of 10 bolts and the pics look extremely accurate to me.

You'd really have to put a tape on it to be sure.... Picture does look like a 2 series case....
