New LS1 Owners - Newbie Tech - NOOB shifting RPM ?

OK, so I've driven quite a few manual transmission cars. Some fast, some slow pick up truck turds etc. Now most that I drove that didn't have a tach, (turds) I could usually tell if I was above the powerband and maxed out for a shift. Ones with a tach, I usually would not go above redline, or if I did, they had a rev limiter, or were a lease and I didn't care. I care too much about this car to chance it. I've taken it up to just over 5 grand, but she still pulls real well. Is there a rev limiter? Where does a stock LS1 usually make it's peak HP? I guess the reason I am really asking this question is because I've seen a few of you guys go a bit too high and bend a pushrod or something similar. Or shift into 2nd instead of 4th on a downshift. So are these issues only when you really spin her up too high, (i.e. 6500 +) Please take it easy on the NOOB.

Rpm is limited from the factory at 6.2k I used to shift mine to where I didn't hit the limiter so like 6k

OK, cool. So now I just need to know where most stockers hit Peak.
Thanks, and funny sig.

The factory tach is a bit slow too so shift a little before that.

I usually shift at 6,000RPM if I'm looking for peak power, that way the RPM's fall right back into the powerband in the next gear.

Stock cars usually peak around 52-5400 rpm. During a race I personally try to shift around 5800 rpm because like MiniTransAm said the factory tachs are not correct.
Also keep in mind that the rev limiter isn't going to save the engine if you mechanicaly over rev it (missed shift).

Agreed, and thank you.

I bought a Hypertech handheld tuner when I got the 3.73 rear gear to reset the factory speedometer and read codes and such. I also reset the rev limiter to 6400 and I've bounced off of it in 1st gear a few times with no harm done. These motors are fantastic and I wonder just how high they can rev without damage???

I've got a shift light that I set to 5800 so I usually end up shifting around 6000. With a stock cam, the motor starts to fall off after that.
And JT: The 6200 factory limiter is there for a reason. I doubt the car is any faster from the extra 200 rpm. The main thing you'll see from over-revving is going to be bent pushrods, unless you really let it go. If your motor is stock internally, I'd leave it at 6200 because threre's really no advantage to winding it out past there.

Thanks for the compliments, just to add something, If you miss a gear and go from 3 to 2 for example, you will probably bend a couple push rods , ask me how I know :chug:

Jimbo, thanks for the advice, I think I'll reset that 6200 point as you suggested. I agree that there is little more to add at that rpm.
As for the missed shifting, I seem to only miss the 2-3 upshift and hit 5th with disasterous results. I'm sure I've broken off all of the synchro ring, listened to it grind to pieces, and thankfully end up in the pan of the trans. 5th is now a pain to shift into but the tranny is still holding together. A tranny rebuild with upgrade is now at the top of the wish list awaiting that lotto win... That stupid clutch sticking at bottom during racing shifts is right below the tranny rebuild on the list. Nothing money can't fix!!!
Bottom line, if you play, you will pay.
