Default Anyone know, Swap out a Volvo Pentar for LS1?

I'm looking at a boat with a Volvo Pentar (chevy s/b) with a Merc Alpha drive but the motor is crap. I'm thinking, swap in a LS1/2/3/6 in there. Any boat guys here that know if it is feasible/reasonable?

No reason it can't happen.. the engine block and Bell housing should accept the drive. Just many have to get the right Flywheel/Flex plate and what ever else you need.. but shouldn't be a problem..

I remember reading about someone else that was sticking it in a boat too.. A motor is a motor when it comes down to it.. just work around the physical limitation and what nots.. and you got a lighter motor that will scream.. !

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. Since there's plenty of room around the motor, I shouldn't have space issues.
thanks

The alpha drive is pretty weak, you will probably want to find a boat with a bravo unit on it. The alpha is rated for a max of 400hp, my buddy has a mild small block making 430hp and he has blown his alpha drive 2 times already in his 20ft cole SS.

Well, that's a bummer. The Bravo drives are double the cost. ewww. But then again, it's not like I can coast to the side of the road and call a tow truck when it breaks down.
Good point. Thanks.

I wouldn't count the alpha out that fast, look at these guys:

They're doing 5/600 through an alpha. There are a few tricks such as using HD upper gears and one particular version of the lower shaft which doesn't have an o-ring groove in it. Along with the requisite drive shower.

But it seems so long as you don't have a big boat and you don't just drop the hammer, you can be alright with one. Just have to remember to keep it around that 400hp mark until you get the revs up, then you can start laying down the power.
